'Locked Down': How to Watch the New Anne Hathaway Movie Online

Locked Down is one of the new genre of movies set and filmed during the coronavirus pandemic (which also includes the upcoming Netflix movie Malcolm and Marie starring Zendaya), with a limited cast of a-list talent finding an intimate way to tell a thrilling story. Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor star in a story that feels very similar to many of our lives, as they find themselves close to breaking up just as lockdown forces them to live together. Unlike our real lives, however, they are also planning a major jewelry heist in the London department store Harrods.

Locked Down is set to be an HBO Max exclusive, with the movie from Bourne Identity and Live Die Repeat director Doug Liman coming to the streaming service on Thursday, January 14.

Viewers who were hoping to watch the movie online for free using an HBO Max free trial, however, will be disappointed. The streamer stopped offering free trials after it was announced that it would be airing Warner Bros. movies the same day they air in theaters.

That means that the cheapest that viewers can watch Locked Down (legally) in the US is $14.99, which is the cost of one month of HBO Max.

As HBO Max is a U.S.-only service, viewers in other countries will have a longer wait before they get to see the new Anne Hathaway movie. Though Canada is also set to get a January release for Locked Down, other countries will not be able to see the film for a few months.

As for what time the movie will be released in the U.S., it is expected around 00:01 a.m. PT / 3:01 a.m. on Thursday, when it will be available to all HBO Max subscribers.

So far, the only other countries that have a set release date for the movie are the U.K. and Ireland, both of which will get Locked Down on March 5, 2021. Notably, this is the same date that another Doug Liman movie is set to be released, the Tom Holland-starring Chaos Walking.

However, with cinemas shut all over the U.K. as it battles a new strain of COVID-19, it remains to be seen whether the movie will move ahead with a digital-only release or whether its release will be pushed forward again.

As for what viewers can expect from the movie, the official HBO Max synopsis reads: "Just as they decide to separate, Linda (Anne Hathaway) and Paxton (Chiwetel Ejiofor) find life has other plans when they are stuck at home in a mandatory lockdown. Co-habitation is proving to be a challenge, but fueled by poetry and copious amounts of wine, it will bring them closer together in the most surprising way."

This, however, rather misses out on the fact that they are also involved in a multi-million dollar heist. This was revealed in the trailer for the movie, which sees them plotting to steal a diamond.

Speaking to People, Hathaway said of filming this movie in London in 2020: "The sheer act of making it, of doing something so collaborative and audacious made us all very focused and open—and strangely free.

"Like the odds were so against us anyway that it made me want to lean into the exhilaration and take risks with my performance. It was scary taking my mask off every day, and so I really appreciated how committed the crew was to keeping their masks on—even when we were shooting in hot rooms and they were carrying heavy camera and lighting equipment they were always, always masked."

Locked Down is released on Thursday, January 14 on HBO Max.
