'The Mandalorian': Rian Johnson Appears to Confirm Baby Yoda for Season 2

The Mandalorian Episode 4 on Disney+ ended with a big cliffhanger, as a sniper appeared to have killed The Child or, as everyone on the internet has taken to calling him, Baby Yoda. For those worried that the year's most adorable 50 year old could be dead, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has some good news for you.

The director, currently on a publicity tour for new film Knives Out, told TheWrap: "I visited the set of The Mandalorian a month ago, and I spotted Baby Yoda in the corner and the producer shot me a look as if to say, 'You can't say a word!' I've been holding that secret in my heart for forever now. And the memes are amazing. I'm very pro-Baby Yoda."

This seems to confirm that the Baby Yoda puppet was on the set on The Mandalorian Season 2, which is currently in production, suggesting that the character will be back for more episodes of the Disney+ series. The first season finished filming in February.

This is one of the few pieces of information that has been revealed from the set of the show, which has been wrapped in secrecy ever since the filming of the first season.

For example, when Disney+ sent out press screeners for its original shows in the lead-up to the launch of the streaming service last month, The Mandalorian episodes were not included in order to hide the reveal of The Child/Baby Yoda as long as possible.

Our first glimpse of The Mandalorian Season 2 set came courtesy of showrunner Jon Favreau, who posted a picture of the main character's (played by Pedro Pascal) helmet on his Instagram a fortnight ago.

The Iron Man and Jungle Book director also revealed that he will be directing an episode of Season 2. He told Entertainment Weekly: "We're working on Season 2, writing, prepping with the directors and getting ready to direct myself, actually... I didn't get a chance the last time around because I was doing Lion King. So I'll step in for one of them."

Also due to direct an episode is Carl Weathers, who appears on the Disney+ show as Greef Karga.

According to an interview Favreau did with Collider in July, at that point they were still in the early stages of filming Season 2, with the actors not yet on set and the crew working on the visual effects for the Star Wars show. He said: "If you visited the set now as we're starting to get into Season 2, it looks a lot like the set of The Lion King as we're planning how we're gonna shoot it ahead of time."

For those looking for more Star Wars Disney+ content, Rian Johnson's own film from the saga, Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, will premiere on Disney+ from December 26.

The Mandalorian episodes air on Fridays on Disney+.
