'Mario Golf: Super Rush' Release Date and Price Revealed

Mario Golf: Super Rush is out this week and will be released exclusively on the Nintendo Switch for a suggested retail price of $59.99.

The multiplayer title is developed by Camelot Software Planning, who have become the go-to studio for Mario's numerous sports-themed offshoots. As well as developing multiple golf spin-offs, they were also responsible for 2018's Mario Tennis Aces and 2017's Mario Sports Superstars, the latter of which saw challengers from across the Mushroom Kingdom competing in a variety of athletic minigames.

Each of these titles puts a fun arcade twist on their given sport, much like Mario Kart does for the racing genre. As such, there are always plenty of super moves, powerups, novelty items, and colorful locations to keep the whole family entertained.

Camelot's latest, Mario Golf: Super Rush, looks to be no different in this regard, as it introduces the novel concept of "speed golf."

What Is Speed Golf?

Announced during February's Nintendo Direct conference, this new mode changes the fundamental objective of golf by incentivizing haste over accuracy, as you will be competing in a race to get your ball into the hole first. In other words, players are not scored against how many swings they have taken, or how close they are to par, but against how quickly they managed to reach the end of the course.

Rather than taking it in turns, like you would in conventional golf, all contestants will swing simultaneously and must then dash after their ball so that they can take their next shot. You will also be able to hinder each other's progress with various special abilities and items. For instance, Luigi can freeze the ground to disrupt his opponents' next swing or to make them lose their footing.

In addition to the debut of "speed golf," there will also be a new battle arena, a story-driven adventure and, of course, standard golf for the traditionalists. The joy-con motion controls will be supported in each of these modes, although they can mercifully be turned off if you would prefer to use buttons instead.

When Is Mario Golf: Super Rush Coming Out and How Much Will It Cost?

Early Japanese verdicts of the game have been incredibly positive, with critics praising the tight controls, the accessible mechanics, and the enjoyable multiplayer component. Famitsu magazine was the first to publish a review of Super Rush, giving it a total score of 33 out of 40. Western reviews have yet to go up, but the game is out very soon so they should not be too far away.

Speaking of which, the release date for Mario Golf: Super Rush is Friday, June 25. Physical copies can be preordered online from a number of retailers, and you can also purchase it from the Nintendo eShop, where it is priced at $59.99.

If you choose the latter, then you will even be able to preload the game so that it is ready to play from 12 a.m. ET on June 25, as soon it is officially released. That being said, it will probably launch with an update so you might want to prepare for a momentary delay before you tee off.

Elsewhere, you can preorder Mario Golf: Super Rush from most U.S retailers, including Target, Amazon, GameStop, Best Buy, and Antonline, where it will again cost $59.99.
