Marjorie Taylor Greene Says Green New Deal Helps China but Shows Symbol of Soviet Union

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene used the prominent symbol of the Soviet Union during a meme-filled speech in which she said the Green New Deal would favor China.

The Georgia congresswoman referred to the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Scooby Doo as she condemned the environmental policy championed by progressives, whose demands include net-zero gas emissions and clean energy sources meeting 100 percent of power demand by 2030.

"This is a simple meme that you would find on the internet," Greene said in the House on Wednesday, pointing to a poster lifted up by her aide which featured a split image of Fred Jones from the Scooby Doo gang.

The bottom half of the poster, titled "let's see who this really is," shows the crime-fighting character whisking off a mask with the words "Green New Deal" on it, in homage to the trademark unveiling of the villain which is the climax of each episode of the cartoon.

"But this meme is very real," Greene continued. "The Green New Deal, surprise, serves China and China only," she said, referring to the bottom half of the image in which the villain's head is superimposed with the hammer and sickle, which are not on the Chinese flag.

The hammer and sickle were on the flag of the Soviet Union from 1922 until its break-up in 1991. Since its foundation in 1949, the flag of the People's Republic of China has had five golden stars in its upper left corner on a red backdrop.

However, the symbols were taken up by communist movements around the world and it was apparent that Greene was likening the Green New Deal to communist ideology.

The Chinese flag did form a part of the next poster that Greene's aide held up, which was superimposed with an image of China's leader Xi Jinping, and captioned "I own Joe Biden and now I own Afghanistan's lithium deposits."

Greene continued: "Democrats want to turn the lights out on America. They want to shut down our economy, they want to end our energy independence and surrender America, putting us on our knees to China, dependent on China, yes, just to drive a car or a truck."

Greene has previously taken aim at progressive Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a champion of the Green New Deal, and has challenged the New York representative to debate the package.

President Joe Biden's administration has embraced tackling climate change but many moderate Democrats have criticized the Green New Deal as unrealistic.

Newsweek has contacted Greene's office for comment.
