Middle Tennessee State University Shooting Leaves One Dead

At least one person died and another was injured after a shooting at Riverdale High School Graduation at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro late on Wednesday.

The shooting took place on campus, at the Murphy Center of MTSU, at about 8:51 p.m., as attendants and students were reportedly leaving the graduation ceremony, as reported by WKRN. Police arrived on the scene to find two victims near the campus' tennis courts—one who was pronounced dead on the scene and another who was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds in "critical but stable conditions."

The graduation of the class of 450 students at had started at 7 p.m., according to NewsChannel 5.

The suspect or suspects who committed the shooting remain at large, Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh told NewsChannel 5.

As a precautionary measure, the school is going to be closed on Thursday, Rutherford County Schools spokesperson James Evans said, as quoted by NewsChannel 5.

"We are doing this as a precaution only," he said.

Authorities did not disclose the name of the victims and did not comment on the suspects, but an investigation is ongoing.

"Tonight's shooting at MTSU is a tragedy," Rutherford County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Dan Goodwin said, as quoted by NewsChannel 5.

"We mourn with the family who lost a loved one and the victim injured. Police found two people suffering from gunshots near the tennis courts. The shooting occurred as individuals were leaving the graduation," Goodwin said. "We are asking for the public's patience. We are at ground zero on this investigation."

Witnesses mentioned by NewsChannel 5 said they heard six gunshots ringing out during the incident. They said the gunfire was the result of a fight between two men, but police have not confirmed this account.

Twitter user @a18217635 wrote that their sister was on the site of the incident, and saw a group of boys.

"My sister was about 10 ft away. shooting occurred outside the building as [people] were leaving. no other description of shooter, just a group of boys. no idea if they were arguing as it was noisy. Two [people] hit," they wrote.

Others who said they were at the events said the shooting was a drive-by, but the police did not support this claim either.

Another user wrote: "I was there heard it all we my family and friends were attending my younger brothers graduation and he took his truck and stopped on the other side of the tennis court we were all drinking could drinks laughing and taking pictures and out of nowhere we hear six shots shoot."
