Minneapolis Public Schools has canceled classes and activities following the fatal shooting of a woman by an immigration officer and ensuing protests.

The school district, which has an enrolment of about 29,000 students, said in a statement on Wednesday that there will be no school, sports and activities on Thursday and Friday “due to safety concerns related to today’s incidents around the city.”

Classes will not move to e-learning because that is only allowed for severe weather, the statement added.

The 37-year-old woman, identified as Renee Nicole Good, was fatally shot in a residential neighbourhood south of downtown Minneapolis during the Trump administration’s latest immigration crackdown in a major city.

Her killing after 9:30 a.m. was recorded on video by witnesses.

Why It Matters

The shooting has reignited tensions in Minneapolis, a focal point for social justice activism after the killing of George Floyd by a police officer in 2020.

Following the shooting, Democratic local leaders and protesters have urged immigration officers to leave the city.

Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz has pledged an independent state investigation.

What To Know

The shooting drew a large crowd of protesters to the scene on Wednesday. Hundreds attended a vigil that evening, the Associated Press reported.

Photos show candles, flowers and signs around a makeshift memorial to Good near where she was killed. One sign read: “ICE in drinks, not communities!” the New York Times reported.

Videos captured by bystanders appear to show an officer approaching an SUV stopped across the roadway, demand she open the door and grab the driver-side door handle.

The Honda Pilot begins to move forward and another ICE officer standing in front of the vehicle draws his weapon and fires at least two shots at close range, jumping back as the SUV moves toward him.

Several federal and local officials characterized the fatal shooting differently.

At a press conference in Minneapolis on Wednesday evening, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that any death is a tragedy but the shooting justified. Noem alleged the woman was trying to block officers with her vehicle, had been harassing them throughout the day and “attempted to run a law enforcement officer over” before she was shot.

President Donald Trump also defended the ICE agent in a post on Truth Social, saying the woman who was killed "willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self defense."

City Mayor Jacob Frey called such accounts “bulls***” saying it was a case of “an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed."

The death was at least the fifth linked to immigration crackdowns since 2024.

What People Are Saying

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey told Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Wednesday to “get the f*** of Minneapolis.”

He said: "We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety and you are doing exactly the opposite. People are being hurt. Families are being ripped apart. Long-term Minneapolis residents that have contributed so greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy are being terrorized. And now somebody is dead. That's on you.”

Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, whose district the shooting occurred in, wrote on X that ICE’s actions were “unconscionable and reprehensible.”

She added: “This is not law enforcement. It is state violence. It is simply indefensible, and ICE must be held accountable. That must include a full, comprehensive investigation and legal action against the agency.”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz wrote on X, in response to a post from the Department of Homeland Security: "I’ve seen the video. Don’t believe this propaganda machine. The state will ensure there is a full, fair, and expeditious investigation to ensure accountability and justice.”

The Department of Homeland Security posted on X: “Today, ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism. An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots. He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers. The alleged perpetrator was hit and is deceased. The ICE officers who were hurt are expected to make full recoveries.”

President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social: “I have just viewed the clip of the event which took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is a horrible thing to watch. The woman screaming was, obviously, a professional agitator, and the woman driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self defense. Based on the attached clip, it is hard to believe he is alive, but is now recovering in the hospital.”

He added: “The situation is being studied, in its entirety, but the reason these incidents are happening is because the Radical Left is threatening, assaulting, and targeting our Law Enforcement Officers and ICE Agents on a daily basis.”

What Happens Next

Protests against the shooting are likely to continue in the coming days.

Commissioner Bob Jacobson of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety said the department’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension would investigate the shooting in conjunction with the FBI.

“Keep in mind that this is an investigation that is also in its infancy,” Jacobson told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday. “So any speculation about what has happened would be just that.”
