'NCIS: Hawaii' Release Date, Cast, Trailer, Plot: How to Watch the New Spin-Off

NCIS may have lost its New Orleans spin-off last season, but it has launched a new series for the 2021-2022 season.

NCIS: Hawaii is the first new spin-off of the CBS show for seven years, and stars Vanessa Lachey as the first woman to be in charge of the Pearl Harbor Field Office. She is also the first female actor to lead an NCIS show.

The cast of Hawaii was announced a few months ago, and in the last few weeks Lachey and the show's team have been sharing trailers and details of the plot in the lead-up to the release date.

Here's what we know so far about the series.

When is NCIS: Hawaii out?

CBS is set to start airing the new series on Monday, September 20 at 10 p.m. ET / 9 p.m. CT. This is directly following the Season 19 premiere of the mothership NCIS, which airs from 9 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. CT.

The official premiere pilot episode synopsis reads: "An experimental Naval aircraft crashes on Oahu, and Tennant and her team must find who is behind it before classified state secrets are exposed."

After the pilot, episodes will air weekly on Mondays at 10 p.m. CT / 9 p.m. ET.

For viewers who want to watch the series online, Paramount+ is the streaming home for all NCIS shows. Hawaii is available to stream live as it airs on the streamer, with episodes available to watch on-demand shortly after they air.

CBS has also announced the full NCIS: Hawaii team. Starring alongside Lachey are the following:

  • Alex Tarrant (Vegas, the upcoming Amazon Lord of the Rings show) as Kai Holman, a Marine and island native he has returned to Hawaii to care for his father;

What will happen in NCIS: Hawaii?

The official CBS summary reads: "The world's most successful television series continues on the seductive shores of the Aloha State with NCIS: Hawaii, where the first female Special Agent in Charge of NCIS Pearl Harbor, Jane Tennant, has thrived and risen through the ranks by equal parts confidence and strategy in a system that has pushed back on her every step of the way.

"Together with her unwavering team of specialists, they balance duty to family and country while investigating high-stakes crimes involving military personnel, national security and the mysteries of the sun-drenched island paradise itself."

In a TV Insider interview, show executive producer teased, "we might find some romantic entanglements" among the team members as the show progresses.

Is there a trailer for NCIS: Hawaii?

CBS has released two trailers for the new show, a two-minute preview and a 30-second teaser.

While the latter highlights Jane's struggles in balancing motherhood and work, the former is more dramatic. It begins with an airplane crashing into a Hawaiian mountain, with the NCIS team investigating potential foul play. It also sees Jane switch from being the agent in charge of her team to being an avid soccer mom.
