The Top 10 Most-Watched TV Series on Netflix in December

Netflix brought a number of major new series to streaming subscribers all over the world in December, with a new season of Big Mouth airing alongside the hotly-anticipated Selena bio-series and teen drama Tiny Pretty Things.

The most-watched shows on Netflix this month (per the streamer's own daily top 10 charts and streaming stars aggregator FlixPatrol), however, were two shows launched earlier in the year, both of which also appeared in the list of the most-watched Netflix shows of the year.

10. Paw Patrol

Original series for adults get all the headlines, but shows for kids often remain on the streamer's charts for weeks on ends as parents rely on shows like Paw Patrol and its band of emergency service canines as a form of surrogate babysitting.

9. Sweet Home

South Korean content has been huge on Netflix this year, with #Alive one of the most-watched movies on the streamer this year and It's Okay to Not Be Okay achieving a similar feat in the TV charts. Following in their footsteps in Sweet Home, the latest apocalyptic horror to come out of the country that brought the world Train to Busan.

8. Start-Up

An even more popular South Korean series, meanwhile, was Start-Up, a romantic comedy love triangle set in the world of tech entrepreneurs which began streaming on Netflix in October.

7. Selena

Star Trek: Discovery may be a CBS All Access original in the U.S., but outside of America the show airs weekly on Netflix. And with a fourth season already ordered, the latest Star Trek spin-off is going from strength to strength.

5. The Mess You Leave Behind

The latest Spanish Netflix series in December 2020 was The Mess You Leave Behind, a thriller directed by Elite co-writer Carlos Montero which focuses on a substitute teacher who slowly discovers the disturbing events that led to the death of her predecessor.

4. Virgin River

Netflix began their December original series line-up with Season 2 of Virgin River, their story of small town life and love in rural California which became a low-stakes favorite for Netflix subscribers – particularly in the U.S., where the show spent multiple days at the top of the charts.

3. Tiny Pretty Things

Of all the shows released by Netflix in December, the most-watched according to its own charts was Tiny Pretty Things, its latest trashy teen drama. This time, the setting is an elite boarding school, but the same brand of sex and murder behind hits like Riverdale, Elite and 13 Reasons Why is very much in force.

2. The Crown

Entering its second month as one of Netflix's most-watched shows, The Crown Season 4 remained a huge hit throughout December. This is no surprise, as in many ways it is the season that Royal Family fans have been waiting for, as Princess Diana finally entered the story.

Despite being released in October, The Queen's Gambit remains the most-watched show on Netflix – and, in fact, the most-watched Netflix show of the year. As a drama about chess, it may seem like an unlikely international hit, but the Anya Taylor-Joy show has clearly struck a chord across the world.
