The 10 Most-Watched TV Shows on Netflix in August 2021

Netflix's U.S. charts featured shows such as Manifest (recently saved by Netflix), Grace and Frankie and All American, but none of these made it onto the worldwide chart below.

Instead, the international chart is full of shows that are not on American Netflix, but are some of the U.S.'s biggest shows.

Both the U.S. and international chart, however, had the same number one, which was probably August's biggest release for the streaming service.

Here's which show made it to number one, and which huge TV series it beats.

The Most-Watched TV Series on Netflix in August 2021

10. Control Z

Netflix kicked off the month with the second season of Control Z, the Mexican teen drama about a teen hacker revealing all her classmates deadliest secrets.

Though the show has only made it to number 10 overall, it has been a massive enough hit in Latin America that is has already been renewed for Season 3.

9. Riverdale

Though American viewers have to wait until October to watch Season 5 of Riverdale on Netflix, in other countries fans can watch the latest adventures of Archie and co every Wednesday.

Every single unexpected time jump, villainous double deal and sexual shenanigan keeps the show in the streaming charts.

8. Nevertheless

Netflix's American dramas get the headlines, but its line-up of Korean dramas often match those U.S. shows on a view-by-view basis. The latest hot K-drama is Nevertheless, an odd-couple love story between a promiscuous man and a woman who no longer believes in love.

7. Rick and Morty

An Adult Swim original in the U.S., in other countries viewers get to watch the mind-bending adventures of the pair every week on Netflix. Bad news for American subscribers, though: it is not set to come to the streamer there at all.

6. AlRawabi School for Girls

The Arabic-speaking world is the latest territory Netflix has its eye on.

The streamer has created AlRawabi School for Girls, a show that tells us a fact about Netflix subscribers, namely that they will watch a soapy teen revenge drama no matter what language it is in, be it Arabic, Spanish (Elite) or English (13 Reasons Why).

5. The Snitch Cartel: Origins

Netflix may be missing the multi-billion dollar intellectual property library of rivals such as Disney+ or HBO Max, but it is also in the prequels and sequels game.

The Snitch Cartel: Origins tells the story that led up to the 2011 movie The Snitch Cartel, but its high-octane drugs and violence has been popular with an audience not even aware of the original movie.

4. Sex/Life

Now in its third month on the Netflix charts, Sex/Life is the latest streaming smash to use sex to become a huge international phenomenon—though not as huge as that thing in that shower scene.

3. Hit & Run

While Netflix is managing big hits by targeting specific countries with local original content, the platform is also experimenting with more international co-productions.

The latest of these is American/Israeli series Hit & Run, a high stakes thriller from the teams that brought you Fauda and The Killing about a man searching for his missing girlfriend.

2. The Good Doctor

This ABC drama about an autistic surgeon is on Hulu in the U.S., but the recent release of Season 4 onto Netflix in other countries has turned it into one of the streamer's biggest hits—unsurprising, as the show was once named the most-watched in the entire world.

1. Outer Banks

This month's most-watched shows list is noticeably light on Netflix originals, but the top spot has unsurprisingly gone to the streamer's biggest release of the month.

The first season of this teen treasure hunting drama was one of the biggest hits of the pandemic, and now this second season has proven the show has legs even when everyone is not trapped in their homes desperate for something to watch.
