New Japan Pro-Wrestling No Longer Broadcasting on AXS TV

The relationship between New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) and AXS TV has come to an end.

On Friday, the official international Twitter account of the wrestling promotion addressed fan queries regarding its 2020 television broadcasts in the United States.

"In response to U.S. fan queries," NJPW Global tweeted, "There are currently no plans for TV broadcast of NJPW events in 2020 (WK14 included) in the U.S. Thank you for joining us on TV so far. We invite you to join @njpwworld for all the action in 2020, LIVE and in English!"

An AXS TV spokesperson confirmed to Newsweek that NJPW is no longer airing on the network.

Tapings of New Japan Pro-Wrestling started broadcasting on AXS TV in January 2015. Episodes of the promotion would air in the United States months after they happened in Japan. But as the viewership of NJPW on AXS TV grew, so did the network's commitment to the product.

Anthem Sports and Entertainment bought AXS TV in October. Anthem, which is a majority stakeholder in Impact! Wrestling, brought the promotion to AXS TV to bolster its sports programming. AXS TV was already the home of NJPW and Women of Wrestling (WOW).

Ed Nordholm, chief corporate officer of Anthem Sports & Entertainment and president of Impact! Wrestling, released this statement to Newsweek regarding programming on AXS TV and the fate of WOW and NJPW at the time:

"Anthem has been public that it has not made any decisions regarding current programming. We have been long-time broadcast partners with TV Asahi for NJPW at Fight Network and hope to build on that relationship. We are in the middle of a season with WOW and about to tape another series of episodes next week, so no reason to make any decisions there in the short term. We're looking forward to getting to know them better."

This news comes at an interesting time for NJPW. The Japanese promotion began its U.S. subsidiary, NJPW of America, in November to increase its footprint stateside. But without a television deal, NJPW may have a difficult time gaining attention with WWE, AEW and other promotions occupying TV space.

Fans of NJPW can still watch the promotion on the official streaming service New Japan World.
