Prince William and Kate's Secret to a Successful Tour—Royal PDA

Since their marriage in 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton have undertaken numerous overseas tours on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II and her government. These tours are opportunities not just for the royal couple to see interesting places but also to be seen in them.

The Cambridges are currently midway through a royal tour of the Caribbean taking in visits to Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas.

This tour, after two years of reduced appearances due to the coronavirus pandemic, presents an opportunity for the public to see the couple over an extended period of time rather than isolated engagements every other week.

The secret to winning over this crowd of royal watchers is the opportunity to witness the intimate moments of the royals' relationship with one another—in other words, those tiny yet tender moments of royal public displays of affection, and William and Kate have mastered this art over time.

During the first leg of their Caribbean tour in Belize, it was these moments which won the hearts of social media users and commentators, including Kate and William dancing towards each other playfully during a traditional Garifuna festival on the second day.

At the final reception in Belize hosted by the Governor General at Cahal Pech, the site of ancient Mayan ruins, William was captured by the press covering the event helping his wife down a flight of steep steps by hand.

This affectionate gesture has its parallels with another earlier this month at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, where William insisted on holding an umbrella for Kate as it began to rain towards the end of the event.

From their earliest tour to Canada together in 2011, to the Platinum Jubilee visit to the Caribbean over a decade later, the Cambridges continue to find ways to show support to one another, with the affectionate tease thrown in for good measure.

Here are just a few of the many occasions William and Kate have successfully deployed royal PDA, winning hearts on royal tours.
