Rescuers Save Dog From Drowning With a Sausage and a Drone

Rescuers saved a dog from almost certain death in the U.K. after they used a drone with a sausage attached to lure the pet to safety.

Denmead Drone Search and Rescue said in a Facebook post they had decided to use food to lure Millie, a 3-year-old Jack Russell-Whippet cross, to safety only after exhausting other options.

Rescuers had to act fast after the pet dog got into trouble on a mud flat with the tide coming in fast near Emsworth on the U.K.'s South Coast.

A coordinated effort involving several groups including emergency first responders in the area ensued.

Among them was a local team of rescuers who use drones in their work and would prove to be the deciding factor in luring the dog away from near-certain drowning and to safety.

"Millie was a very unique rescue! We had lots of people helping us too such as the coast guard, fire and rescue and also the police," Stefani Dennis from Denmead Drone Search and Rescue told Newsweek. "We've been operating now a few years and we've never encountered a search and rescue just like this."

Denmead Drone Search and Rescue said on Facebook that a safe rescue of Millie would not have been possible amid the vast expanse of the mudflats.

With the tide coming in fast and only a small window of time in which to operate, the organization's drone use became crucial to saving the dog.

The drone rescue team calculated the weight that their vehicle could take and after quick deliberation decided to attach the sausage, which successful lured Millie over 300 meters (a little over 980 feet) to safety.

"Using the sausages was to try and lure Millie from the mud flaps onto the grass closer to us and the owners to ensure her safety. She did get the sausage at one point and almost took one of our drones with her!" Dennis said.

The Denmead Drone Search and Rescue Facebook post describing the rescue generated hundreds of positive comments and interactions on the social media site.

Dennis said there had been a similar response in the community.

"The reaction from the community and emergency services has been truly amazing and we couldn't have asked for a better response," he said.

"We cannot thank everyone enough for the support, and the love Millie has received and we are all over the moon that Millie has got home safe."
