'Rick and Morty' Season 4 Release Date April 1? Co-Creator Justin Roiland Offers Update

On April 1, 2017, Rick and Morty premiered the first episode of Season 3 unannounced, re-running the episode "The Rickshank Redemption" over and over for four hours. Other episodes wouldn't follow for four months, with the rest of Season 3 airing weekly, beginning July 30. The surprise premiere was a success, drawing in more viewers each time the episode looped. Since then, Rick and Morty fans have kept a close eye on April Fools' Day, hoping for a reprise that's unlikely to ever happen. But while April 1 probably won't see the premiere of Rick and Morty Season 4, series co-creator Justin Roiland has offered an update on the new episodes' progress.

Roiland described Rick and Morty Season 4 in an Instagram caption. " Rick and Morty Season 4 is happening. It's amazing. It's coming. No need to be upset that I also make other things. Also—no need to argue with the folks begging for S4. I take it as a compliment."

Roiland, who voices both Rick and Morty, was responding to hectoring fans upset at his appearance at the PAX East gaming convention to promote his video game, Trover Saves the Universe, developed by Squanch Games, which Roiland co-founded with Tanya Watson, former executive producer for Fortnite creator Epic Games.

While not definitively stating Rick and Morty Season 4 won't premiere on April 1, Roiland's statement suggests patience, rather than hinting at an imminent release. But Roiland's message to fans isn't the only reason to feel reasonably certain Rick and Morty isn't going to air on Monday.

On a Rick and Morty Season 3 commentary track, Roiland described how the Season 3 premiere has created unanticipated expectations. "That April Fools' stunt really set a strange precedent for disappointing people in the future."

Adult Swim toyed with those exact expectations on April 1, 2018, premiering an 11-minute Australian Rick and Morty parody, starring Reek and Mordi.

Since the surprise April 1 premiere, fans and media outlets have kept a sharp eye out for hints pointing to another surprise, leading to failed predictions, like the nonexistent Christmas episode people "discovered" in an after credits scene with Mr. Poopy Butthole.

After Season 3 (and a protracted negotiation process), Rick and Morty wasn't just renewed for a Season 4, but for 70 new episodes. The most likely release date for Rick and Morty Season 4 is July 28—the two previous seasons (excepting the April 1 surprise premiere) both began airing the last Sunday in July.
