Royal Family Member Vets Rebel Wilson's Jokes, BAFTA Host Says

Rebel Wilson told BBC's The One Show that she texts a mystery member of the royal family to check if her jokes have their seal of approval.

Speaking to presenters Lauren Laverne and Jermaine Jenas on Wednesday, Wilson explained:

"I do have a connection with a royal family member who I may text certain jokes to see if it's OK by them."

Wilson is set to host the 75th BAFTA Film Awards ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday.

The event is attended by the leading film stars of the year and usually BAFTA's royal patron Prince William, accompanied by Kate Middleton. Due to what has been termed as "diary constraints," however, it has been announced that Prince William will not attend this year's ceremony. Instead, he has recorded a video message to be played on the night, according to The Mirror.

The prince has not attended the ceremony since 2020. The following year he canceled his scheduled appearance at the awards owing to the recent death of his grandfather Prince Philip.

The nominations for the 2022 BAFTA Film Awards were highly anticipated as filmgoers speculated whether Kristen Stewart would receive a nomination for her portrayal of Princess Diana in the controversial film Spencer. She did not, though did receive a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress in recognition of her performance.

While the identity of Wilson's royal confidante remains a secret, her confession comes following her presentation of the Best Director award at the 2020 BAFTAs. Beginning her speech Wilson said: "It's really great to be here at the Royal Andrew—Royal Harry— Royal Philip—no, Royal... Palace Place?"

The ceremony occurred during a strained period for the royals with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle transitioning out of full-time working members of the royal family amid "Megxit", and allegations of sexual assault being lodged against Prince Andrew.

After William and Kate were awkwardly shown not reacting to Wilson's jokes on the televised broadcast of the award, she told The Sun: "I did speak to Kate and William's private secretary after the BAFTAs and all seemed fine."

Wilson's jokes went on to highlight the lack of diversity in that year's nominees and also the unequal balance between the number of men nominated and women.

Amanda Berry OBE, CEO of BAFTA, said in a statement: "We are delighted to welcome Rebel Wilson as this year's host of the EE British Academy Film Awards. Rebel has stolen the show at several previous Film Awards, and we're hugely excited to see her bring her fantastic charisma and humor to the whole show as we celebrate the very best in film."

Though Wilson may not have Prince William in the audience on Sunday night, she believes that the royals enjoy a joke at their own expense. Speaking to Laverne and Jenas, she said:

"They actually have a really great sense of humor. People think [not] because of their position but they like to laugh as well!"

The 75th BAFTA Film Awards will take place on Sunday night at the Royal Albert Hall. Leading the nominations are Denis Villeneuve's Dune with 11 nominations and Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog with 8.
