Wayne Rooney has welcomed the arrival of Jose Mourinho to Manchester United, describing his new manager as "one of the best in the world."

Rooney, a player Mourinho tried to sign while at Chelsea, was talking ahead of England's friendly with Portugal this Thursday.

Mourinho replaced Louis van Gaal as manager on Friday, signing a three-year deal.

The United and England captain said the signing of the Portuguese manager, who won the Premier League three times with Chelsea, was "exciting" for all the players at Old Trafford.

"[He is] one of the best managers in the world," Rooney said. "[He] knows the Premier League well.

"For myself and all the other players at Manchester United, it is exciting times."
