The Red Sox made needed additions to their starting rotation this offseason, trading for ace Garrett Crochet and signing veteran Walker Buehler. But Boston reportedly nearly went in a different direction, which would've led them to a reunion with a postseason hero.

On Wednesday, WEEI's Rob Bradford reported the Red Sox were finalists to sign Nathan Eovaldi, who ultimately returned to the Texas Rangers on a three-year, $75 million deal in free agency.

"Per source, Nathan Eovaldi's decision this offseason came down to the Red Sox and Rangers," Bradford wrote on the X platform. "There were six legit suitors."

Texas Rangers pitcher Nathan Eovaldi

...

Eovaldi spent parts of five seasons with the Red Sox. Most notably, he was one of Boston's best pitchers during its run to a World Series championship in 2018.

Eovaldi left the Red Sox after the 2022 campaign to sign a two-year deal with the Rangers. He'll toe the rubber Thursday afternoon when Texas opens its season against Boston, which will hand the ball to Crochet.

Should the Red Sox have extended themselves to reunite with Eovaldi instead of signing Buehler to a one-year prove-it deal for $21.05 million? Time will tell.
