New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is set to undergo further testing on his throwing elbow following elbow soreness that wouldn't go away.

At this point, it might be best for the Yankees to prepare for the worst-case scenario with Cole. If they're going to lose their ace for a chunk of time, it might be smart to explore the starting pitching on the trade market.

Dayn Perry of CBS Sports linked the Yankees to a shocking reunion amid the Cole injury news. Perry suggested the Yankees could target old friend Michael King of the San Diego Padres if Cole is set to miss a significant chunk of time.

San Diego Padres pitcher Michael King

...

"Old friend alert. The Padres acquired King from these same Yankees as part of the December 2023 Soto blockbuster," Perry wrote. "King fared remarkably well in his first season as a full-time starter last year. In 173 ⅔ frames, he put up 2.95 ERA/3.33 FIP with 201 strikeouts and earned a seventh-place finish in the NL Cy Young vote.

"Like Cease, he's eligible for free agency at the end of the upcoming season. Also, like Cease, his availability assumes the Padres are still looking to shed payroll."

King would be an incredible fit with the Yankees again for a few different reasons. Obviously, he knows the organization, what's expected, and how they operate. He was well-liked while he played in pinstripes, and the clubhouse would likely welcome him back with open arms.

King is a very talented pitcher with a lot of untapped potential left in the tank. It would be a bit of a costly trade for the Yankees to swing, but it would likely prove to be well worth it if New York could land him and secure him on a longer contract.
