Cooks is expected to miss the next four games. The receiver had an infection develop in his right knee after undergoing a procedure last week in New York.

It was initially reported that Cooks would miss one game in Pittsburgh, but the infection requires a multi-week absence for the receiver. It's a tough loss for the Dallas offense.

The 31-year-old will be eligible to return on Nov. 10 when the Cowboys face the Philadelphia Eagles. With Cooks set to miss the next four games, it opens the door for other receivers to step up in his absence.

"It's an opportunity to show the depth of this team, and what we're made of," quarterback Dak Prescott said, via the team transcript. "Young guys, as we talk about, you were going to have to count on them late in the year — we've got to count on them now. That's the NFL. I mean, honestly it's how I got my job. It's how a lot of people have stepped in and gotten the job. Tyler Smith, right? When your number's called, jump in, show that you belong here, show that you can prepare the right way, and make the most of your opportunity."

Dallas will likely use Jalen Tolbert as the starter opposite of CeeDee Lamb. Jalen Brooks, KaVontae Turpin, and rookie Ryan Flournoy could also get more snaps after all being inactive through the first four games.

Additionally, the Cowboys also have two receivers on the practice squad in Jalen Cropper and Kelvin Harmon.

Cooks hasn't been a huge playmaker in the Dallas offense in the first four games of the season. Although he caught the team's first score of the season against the Cleveland Browns, he's only recorded nine catches for 91 yards.

Since his season-opening touchdown, he hasn't tallied any more scores.

This is a similar trend to last season where Cooks found a rhythm in the later in the season. Through the first five games of the season in 2023, he recorded nine catches for 73 yards and no touchdowns.

Cooks finished the 2023 season with 54 receptions for 657 yards and eight touchdowns.

Once Cooks returns from injured reserve, the Cowboys hope the wideout will have a resurgence in his production.
