The updates on Kohou were initially not promising, as he was kept out of practice. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel stated that there was too much swelling to know the severity of the injury.
Now, it has been confirmed that Kohou will be out for the 2025 season, which is a massive hit to an already thin Dolphins secondary. Signs were pointing to Kohou being out for some time, as the Dolphins quickly signed Mike Hilton and Jack Jones.
The Dolphins will need to go back to the drawing board in terms of the plan for the secondary moving forward. There are plenty of veterans left, such as Stephon Gilmore, Asante Samuel Jr., Rasul Douglas, and former Miami standout Xavien Howard — just to name a few.
Though the Dolphins have quite a few corners on the roster, the lack of faith in the group past Kohou was suspect. That was likely why the team was quick to bring in Hilton and Jones.
With Kohou lost for the season, Storm Duck, Cam Smith and Kendall Sheffield are the likely options to step into the starting role, and Jones.
The issue is that each of these corners have more questions than answers regarding their ability to start. Duck played well in his rookie season, but he might not be ready for a starting role of this caliber.
Smith has not impressed thus far, even though he was a second-round pick. Sheffield could be the emergent star, but that is just speculation right now.
Jones was just acquired and is the biggest veteran in the group. His issue is giving up eight touchdowns in 2024.
The best possible thing for the Dolphins to do right now is to find a way to bring in one of the aforementioned veterans.
Miami is also dealing with the injury to safety Ashtyn Davis. The good news is he did not suffer a season-ending injury, though he appeared on the field in crutches and a walking boot.
With so many injuries already, the Dolphins might need to try and rebuild through available free agents.
