Quarterback Justin Herbert and his girlfriend, singer Madison Beer, announced their engagement earlier this week, just as the Los Angeles Chargers' training camp was about to begin.

During a media session at camp, Herbert was asked a bit more about the engagement, specifically with regard to its timing in relation to the Chargers' season.

When asked what gave him more anxiety, proposing to Beer or his first career start in the NFL, Herbert said, "the proposal, for sure."

"I thought about it a lot," Herbert said when asked if he considered the timing of the proposal being over a month before the NFL season begins.

Teammate Derwin James also shared his reaction to the news of Herbert's engagement, claiming he'd known his teammate was going to pop the question for a while.

"I was like, 'Aw man, congrats.' I was happy for him," James told reporters. "It was between 7 and 8 a.m. when I seen it. He told me he was gonna do it a long time ago. It was fun to see."

Herbert, 28, and Beer, 27, have dated for nearly a year. The couple has yet to divulge any specific date for their wedding, but Herbert will follow in the footsteps of several other quarterbacks who got married last year.

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen tied the knot with his girlfriend, actress Hailee Steinfeld, in May 2025. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts married his longtime girlfriend, Bryonna "Bry" Burrows, in June 2025.

Timing is everything, and it certainly made more sense for Herbert to propose now rather than during the hectic NFL season. His team reached the postseason last year but lost to the Houston Texans in the AFC Wild Card Round.

Herbert ranked ninth among quarterbacks with 3,727 passing yards and was tied with Baker Mayfield for seventh with his 26 touchdowns thrown.

With Beer saying "yes," he now has her ready for a wedding at some point in the future. Now he can put his focus more on the work that's ahead for the Chargers.

Once training camp wraps up, they'll focus on the preseason with their first game Thursday, Aug. 13, against the Texans. They'll play in their first regular-season game on Sunday, Sept. 13, against the Arizona Cardinals.
