New England could still trade for Brown this offseason, but another key player appears to be entering the mix.
On Friday, the Baltimore Ravens agreed to send two first-round picks to the Las Vegas Raiders for defensive end Maxx Crosby. The Ravens backed out of the deal (because of medical concerns) before it could become finalized on Wednesday.
The Raiders could keep Crosby or trade him to another suitor, but the defensive end's price is expected to come down from what Baltimore offered.
Per Mike Giardi of the Boston Sports Journal, Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf left open the possibility of trading for Brown, though he appeared more receptive to questions about Crosby.
“I'm not going to talk about a specific player that's under contract with another team, but we're happy," Wolf said. "We're happy with the guys that we signed.”
Per Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, the Patriots are looking into their cap space to see if they have room to trade for Crosby.
"I'd have to talk to (director of research) Richard Miller about our numbers right now," Wolf said. "So, again, we'll look into any player that we think can help us."
Crosby would be a huge addition to the Patriots defense, though most of New England's problems in the playoffs could be traced back to the offense.
The Patriots need help on the offensive line and with receivers.
