'Succession' Creator Jesse Armstrong Gives Season 4 Update

There is good news for Succession fans, the faint silence of Succession Season 4 has been officially broken.

Succession flames have reignited again following Matthew Macfadyen's win at the 2022 BAFTA TV Awards. Macfadyen took home the prestigious award for Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the indescribable Tom Wabsgans in the multi-award-winning HBO drama, Succession.

Unfortunately, Macfadyen was not there in person to accept the award, but luckily, Succession creator Jesse Armstrong was there to accept on his behalf. Armstrong was not alone though, via text Armstrong had a message to share from his co-star Nicholas Braun, A.K.A Greg the Egg.

Speaking to Newsweek and other press after accepting the award, Armstrong not only spoke highly of Macfayden, but he also gave an update on the status of Succession Season 4, the future of the show, and teased just a little bit of what fans can expect.

It's been over four months since Succession Season 3 ended, leaving fans to deal with the aftermath of what was effective, their equivalent of a red wedding.

Logan Roy (played by Brian Cox) was the only Roy family member to make it out of Season 3 unscathed, thanks to a jaw-dropping move made by Macfayden's character, Tom.

Tom, Shiv's (Sarah Snook) husband, was the only person who knew of the Roy sibling's plans to block their father's deal with Mattson (Alexander Skarsgård).

Succession fans will remember it all fell apart in Logan's villa when he announced their mother Caroline (Harriet Walter) had given up her own and their place in the holding company as part of a re-negotiated divorce settlement with Logan.

However, to get Caroline on the phone, Logan must have known his kids were coming to take him down and the only person in the family who knew of the Roy sibling's plans was Shiv's husband, Tom.

Going into Season 4, it looks like Shiv with the help of Kendall and Roman (Kieran Culkin) will be going to another war: audiences just didn't think it would be against her husband and father on the same team.

For months, Succession fans have been trying to gauge what will happen next and Armstrong has some (vague) answers.

He told Newsweek and other press writing for Season 4 was coming to an end.

Armstrong shared: "We are just almost wrapping up the season. We write and we do it here in London, so the American writers come over. I always have some ideas to go into with but they are really good people to talk about the nuances of a character and the world watching the show."

As for the plot of Season 4, Armstrong remained tight-lipped but did have some stuff to share on the big twists in Succession that never fail to shock viewers.

Armstrong confessed he sometimes knows what's coming and other times, does not.

He shared: "I guess sometimes you come in with one [idea] but mainly that is what the writing room is for, for putting different things we think are going to happen together and finding and not always finding those things which people find surprising [in the show]."

As for Succession's future, Armstrong does not have an end date in mind but knows, the Succession story will end at some point.

He said: "I don't think it should go on forever [but] we are still having fun at the moment."

At the moment, Succession Season 4 does not have a release date, but, if previous release dates are any indication, it could be as early as 2023.

However, there was a two-year gap between seasons two and three due to COVID-19 and there is the possibility that Season 4 could follow suit, considering filming has not started.

In the meantime, the first three seasons are available to stream on HBO Max now.
