United States President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky met Sunday to discuss a move towards peace amid the continuing Russia-Ukraine war.
Both said they had come "a lot closer" to a resolution to the years-long conflict.
The meeting took place in Mar-a-Lago following a call between Trump and Vladimir Putin.
What To Know:
- President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky have concluded their meeting at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday as the pair sought to make significant progress on agreeing to a peace deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war that began nearly four years ago.
- Trump revealed in a post on Truth Social that he spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of his meeting with Zelensky, adding that he had a "good and very productive telephone call" with the Russian leader.
- Negotiations to end the war have continued over the past 11 months, with Trump seeming to change his mind on how the eventual peace deal should unfold—first that Ukraine should prepare to concede territory to Russia, including land that Moscow had not yet taken; then saying that Ukraine could retake all of its land.

Trump Says He and Putin Talked During ‘Russia Hoax’
President Trump bemoaned the "Russia Hoax" several times when addressing reporters Sunday following his meeting with Zelensky.
Trump said he and Putin spoke over the phone often and maintained a good relationship despite claims of Russian collusion in the 2020 election.
"He'd call me, I call him, I say, can you believe the stuff that they're making up?" Trump said, recalling his conversations with Putin.
"And it turned out we were right. They made it all up. And despite that, we didn't get into war. So we didn't get into problems, but we weren't able to trade very much or any of that," he said.
Trump continued to say it was a "shame" due to the loss of possible trade with Russia.
"They have great land, great minerals and other things, and we have things that they want very badly," he said.

European Commission President Says ‘Good Progress’ Made on Call
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said she, along with several other European leaders, had a “good, one-hour-long call” with President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday.
“There was good progress, which we welcomed,” she wrote in a post on X. She said European countries are ready to continue supporting Ukraine and U.S. partners to “consolidate this progress.”
Von der Leyen concluded her post writing, “Paramount to this effort is to have ironclad security guarantees from day one.”
The EU Commission president had said in Saturday post that she, along with other leaders, had “touched base” ahead of the today’s highly anticipated meeting between Trump and Zelensky, and noted that the EU Commission “will continue to keep up the pressure on the Kremlin, sustain our support to Ukraine, and work intensely to accompany Ukraine on its path toward EU membership.”

Trump Calls Out Reporter: ‘Dumb Question’
President Donald Trump called out a reporter for what he described as a “dumb question” during a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday.
A reporter, who was difficult to hear, asked the president if he is “prepared to sign security documents today?” To which Trump responded, “Well, it depends on what the security agreements,” before cutting in and stating, “what a dumb question.”
The president continued, “Nobody even knows what the security agreement is going to say,” adding, “But there will be a security agreement, it’ll be a strong agreement, and the European nations are very much involved in that.”
The joint press conference comes after the two leaders meet for nearly three hours with regards to ending the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Trump said that negotiators are getting “closer” to a peace deal.
Trump has repeatedly spoken back to reporters during pressers, including last month calling a CBS News reporter a "stupid person” at Mar-a-Lago Thanksgiving press conference. In November, he snapped at a reporter in the press pool aboard Air Force One who asked about his name being mentioned in the emails sent by Jeffrey Epstein, telling her “Quiet, piggy.”
