Golden Donald Trump Statue Appears at CPAC, Gets Biblical Mocking on Twitter

Twitter users have reacted with mockery after a video emerged showing a golden statue of Donald Trump being wheeled around at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Orlando, Florida.

The clip, filmed by Bloomberg reporter William Turton, shows two men pushing the statue of the former president, who is wearing a suit jacket with tie, stars and stripe boxing shorts and red sandals. It has been viewed more than four million times since it was uploaded on Thursday night.

In the video, onlookers can be heard describing the statue as "awesome" and "so cool" as it is pushed by.

However, the clip was also heavily ridiculed online, with many making biblical references to idolizing false gods and the golden calf Moses destroys in the Old Testament.

Others expressed concerns that the GOP seems far from ready to move on from Trump, looks set to remain a powerful influence for a long time.

Political commentator and television host Joy Reid tweeted: "As many people have noted in the replies, it appears the conservative 'Christians' of the Trumpian right have gone all-in on worshipping their golden calf."

"Seriously, did these folks not read the Old Testament?" added national security attorney Bradley P. Moss.

Actor Josh Jordan wrote: "A golden statue of Trump is as good a summary of CPAC as one could possibly make.

"I asked CPAC if they were afraid of offending God with a golden Trump statue and they said 'Trump is God.' (I'm kidding, I think)."

Journalist Dave King tweeted: "To anyone who wants to fool themselves into thinking Donald Trump's grip over the Republican Party is coming to an end... They erected a literal golden statue of him at the party's most influential annual conservative gathering."

Legal analyst Joyce Alene added: "This is what the Republican Party has reduced itself to. Worshippers of the golden Trump. Also, I've never seen this expression on Trump's face. It looks almost like they're trying to morph him into something Reagan-esque."

It is unclear where the Trump statue was being wheeled to.

Trump is scheduled to be a keynote speaker at CPAC this Sunday in what will be his first major public event since leaving the White House.

Axios previously reported, citing unnamed sources, that Trump will use the speech to lay the groundwork to become the party's presumptive 2024 nominee.

"Trump effectively is the Republican Party," Trump senior adviser Jason Miller told Axios.

"The only chasm is between Beltway insiders and grassroots Republicans around the country. When you attack President Trump, you're attacking the Republican grassroots."
