The final episode of This is Us will be set in two time periods, in the current day at Rebecca Pearson's (Mandy Moore) funeral and then at a point in the early 90s when she and Jack were still alive.

The This is Us cast have reflected on the show coming to an end and what it means to say goodbye to their characters, with Justin Hartley, who plays Kevin Pearson, telling Newsweek that he now felt "at peace" with it.

"You know, it's interesting, I don't know what's going on with me but I'm totally at peace with it and happier than I've ever been," Hartley said.

"It was the greatest job I've ever had. The opportunities that it gave me, in the way it changed my life, I could just go on and on."

He added: "I think one of the really healthy things that I was able to do was we knew the show was coming to an end about three years ago, and so for the last three years I've kind of been saying goodbye.

"I've been savoring the flavor, I've been savoring every moment, I've been looking at people remembering things, you know, banking things, things I'll never forget.

"For the past three or four years I've been doing that, especially the past three years, when we knew the show was ending after six seasons.

"So, it's been sort of something that I've been ready for, I've been prepped for. I also feel like, I mean I could be crazy, but I also feel like I'm going to see these guys a lot. I mean, I don't see us really falling out of touch."

Moore spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the final episode, saying of the finale: "I cried just because it was the end, but it was not nearly as upsetting to me. I was like, 'Ah, what a beautiful way to wrap this up.'

"I just remember closing it going, 'You stuck the landing, Dan. You really did. No one's going to be disappointed. This is a really beautiful way to end this story.'"

Ventimiglia, who reprises his role of Jack in the finale, added: "It feels complete. It feels like there's no more room for anything else, nor does it need anything else. It's just full."

Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate Pearson, spoke about the last episode with Entertainment Tonight, saying: "I think people will be very content [with the finale] and I felt like, 'Wow, this is such an indication of the ripple effects that we have on people.'

"Whether we're still alive, whether we're a part of their family... there are so many ways that we can affect others' lives. Whether we know it or not."

Sterling K. Brown, who plays Randall Pearson, also discussed the final episode ahead of its premiere, telling TVLine that because they were filming Rebecca's funeral, the cast didn't need to try hard to tap into their emotions.

"More than anything, I think because we knew we were saying goodbye to Rebecca as we were saying goodbye to the show, it was already in us," Brown told the publication.

"You didn't have to force it. It was pretty readily available on the surface. As something as beautiful as this experience, as her character were all coming to an end simultaneously, everybody had strong feelings about it.

"So I'm glad we got a chance to shoot it when we did instead of, you know, three or four years ago, and have three or four more years to go."

This is Us' final episode airs on Tuesday, May 24 at 9 p.m. EDT on NBC.
