'What We Do in the Shadows' Season 3 Ending Explained: Is Colin Robinson Really Dead?

What We Do in the Shadows rarely pulls its punches with its comedy or its shocking reveals, and Episode 9 of Season 3 was no exception.

The penultimate episode of the series saw energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) expire after reaching his 100th birthday.

Seemingly confirming his fate, the episode ended with Colin's blood-sucking housemate Nandor (Kayvan Novak) accidentally making his face cave in when he thought he was playing a prank and was trying to wake him up.

But the Season 3 finale revealed there was a lot more to the tale.

How did the vampires react to Colin Robinson's death?

"The Portrait" is predominantly focused on the aftermath of Colin Robinson's apparent death, with vampires Nandor, Laszlo (Matt Berry), and Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) ignoring their feelings and moving on.

As per vampire tradition, the housemates, their familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), The Baron (Doug Jones), The Guide (Kristen Schall) and The Sire sit to have a new portrait done without their deceased friend.

Guillermo argues that the vampire trio are simply running away from their grief rather than facing it, and this only becomes more evident when Nandor declares his intention to travel the world and Nadja persuades Laszlo to go to England with her so she can take a spot on the Supreme Vampiric Council.

After a brief violent exchange, in which vampire hunter Guillermo claims Nandor is only alive because he lets him be, the latter asks his familiar to go traveling with him, and promises he will sire him.

Guillermo delightedly agrees but before he goes with Nandor he helps Nadja and Laszlo get onto their ship to England, only for the lothario vampire to lock him in his coffin and send him off to be his wife's bodyguard across the pond.

Nandor waits for Guillermo to join him for the midnight train as late as possible, but eventually gets on it to start his journey on his own.

Is Colin Robinson really dead?

The reason why Laszlo sent Nadja on her way with Guillermo is because he discovered a shocking truth about Colin Robinson.

While Nadja was organizing their things for their departure, Laszlo decided to take one final moment to mourn his friend, only to discover something had escaped from his corpse.

Following a track of slime through the basement he comes across Colin Robinson as a newborn baby, and decides he has to stay on Staten Island with him.
