Wordle is the daily brainteaser that gives players the chance to guess a five-letter word in six tries or less.

The game uses a color-coded system to help players along the way by turning letters green, yellow or grey depending on whether the letter is in the right place, in the wrong place or not in the word at all.

But sometimes the code is not enough to figure out what the Wordle word of the day is, especially if a letter repeats itself in the word, and so a hint or two might be needed and that's where Newsweek comes in.

As well as providing useful clues to Wordle #290, Newsweek will also be including the answer at the bottom of the article.

Wordle was created by Josh Wardle as a personal game for him and his partner to play, and he then made it available to the public in October 2021, at which point it became a global hit and drew in over 45 million users.

The puzzle became so popular it inspired a number of similar daily games like math-based Nerdle and the music-based Heardle.

Wardle sold his game to The New York Times in January 2022, and the publication has been hosting the puzzle since February.

The graph below, provided by Statista, shows Wordle's rise in popularity.
