YouTube Reveals Top 10 Trending Videos of the Year

YouTube has revealed its list of the top 10 trending videos of 2021.

The online video sharing and social media platform is the second-most-visited website in the world, with an estimated 122 million daily active users spending an average of 18 minutes on the site.

According to YouTube, a billion hours worth of content is watched on the website every single day. This latest list isn't a breakdown of the year's most-watched videos though.

YouTube looked at a range of factors that determine how "trending" a video is, including the nature and the volume of viewership specifically in that country—in this case, the U.S.—which may be different from the public view count.

Many videos just missed the cut, shorts and music videos were excluded as they feature in their own list while only one video qualifies per creator.

10. Dude Perfect: Game Night Stereotypes

Texas-based comedy group Dude Perfect scored a big hit with this video lampooning some of the familiar and frustrating tropes associated with game nights. This video has been viewed more than 30 million times.

9. Forge Labs: I Spent 100 Days in a Zombie Apocalypse in Minecraft... Here's What Happened

Gaming accounts for a large chunk of YouTube's viewership so it's no surprise to see this video make the list, especially as it centers on Minecraft, a game that boasts 141 million monthly active users. This effort from Canadian YouTuber Forge Labs has been watched over 43 million times.

8. Biden Inaugural Committee: The Inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris | Jan. 20th, 2021

The 6 hour and 55 minute video of President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris' inauguration racked up over 14 million views, coming two weeks on from the January 6 U.S. Capitol Attacks.

7. America's Got Talent: Golden Buzzer: Nightbirde's Original Song Makes Simon Cowell Emotional

America's Got Talent has provided many memorable moments down the years and 2021 was no different with Nightbirde strikingly original song bringing everyone, including Simon Cowell, to tears. Her rendition proved similarly powerful online with the video watched over 37 million times.

6. Dhar Mann: Kids MAKE FUN OF Boy With AUTISM, They Instantly Regret It

This short film, created by video producer and internet personality Dharminder "Dhar" Mann sought to shine a light on the realities of life with autism and helped raise funds for the Organization For Autism Research. It's been watched over 45 million times.

5. CoryxKenshin: Friday Night Funkin' KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER (Part 2)

Gamer and YouTuber CoryxKenshin scored a big hit with this video of him dazzling on the popular rhythm game Friday Night Funkin'. The clip has garnered more than 21 million views.

4. NFL: The Weeknd's FULL Pepsi Super Bowl LV Halftime Show

The yearly spectacle that is the NFL Super Bowl halftime show did not disappoint this year, with The Weeknd pulling out all the stops with a brilliantly choreographed show featuring some of his biggest hits.

The video, which can be viewed here, has been watched over 42 million times.

3. Mark Rober: Glitterbomb Trap Catches Phone Scammer (who gets arrested)

Arguably the most satisfying video on this list, former NASA and Apple engineer Mark Rober took followers on a journey as he took on and successfully took down a major phone scam. The 22-minute clip has been watched 48 million times.

2. Dream: Minecraft Speedrunner VS 5 Hunters

Proving once again that YouTube is a popular platform for gamers and Minecraft in particular, this frantic video has racked up a crazy 62 million times. The work of Minecraft YouTuber Dream, this mad dash through the game has proven popular to say the least.

1. MrBeast: I Spent 50 Hours Buried Alive

Though he recently hit the headlines after making his very own real-life version of the hit Netflix series Squid Game, YouTube stunt artist MrBeast's biggest hit came when he successfully spent 50 hours buried alive.

The stuff of most people's nightmares, the video has been watched over 148 million times in a figure that dwarfs anything else on this list.
