Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Appears To Put Mask On for Photo Op in Viral Video

New video footage shows Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez putting on a face mask just before a group photo on the steps of the Capitol on Tuesday during a sit-in calling for an extension to the national moratorium on evictions.

Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat representing New York's 14th congressional district, was attending a protest organized by Representative Cori Bush of Missouri's 1st district when the video was captured.

The video, shared on Twitter by Breitbart News, has now been viewed more than 140,000 times. It shows Ocasio-Cortez sitting on the steps of the Capitol with other protesters and preparing for a group photo.

Ocasio-Cortez is not initially wearing a mask as the group of people gets ready for the photo but she begins to pull a mask toward her face and can be heard saying: "Oh, Cori had to run do a... she had to run do a hit."

This suggests the video was filmed while Bush was speaking to the media. Ocasio-Cortez then puts the mask on and the photo is taken.

Some members of the crowd follow her example and don their masks, while Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), who is already wearing a mask, joins them and sits in the front.

The group says "housing is a human right" as the photo is taken. Markey then pulls down his mask and the camera zooms in on his face as the crowd claps.

The Breitbart video then cuts to what it describes as "one minute later" and shows Ocasio-Cortez sitting on the steps talking to members of the crowd and not wearing a mask, but it does not show her taking the mask off.

Of course!

Photos from Getty Images and on social media indicate that the video was captured on Tuesday during the anti-eviction event organized by Bush. Ocasio-Cortez can be seen wearing the same clothes that she wore during part of that day and Markey also attended for a period of time.

Ocasio-Cortez is fully vaccinated and current guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say fully vaccinated people do not generally have to wear masks outdoors. Indoor mask-wearing is still recommended regardless of vaccine status, especially in areas of high transmission.

The CDC also issued a new eviction moratorium on Tuesday in what will likely be seen as a victory for Bush and Ocasio-Cortez. The evictions ban applies to parts of the country with substantial and high transmission rates of COVID-19.

In a statement, CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said: "The emergence of the delta variant has led to a rapid acceleration of community transmission in the United States, putting more Americans at increased risk, especially if they are unvaccinated."

"This moratorium is the right thing to do to keep people in their homes and out of congregate settings where Covid-19 spreads," Walensky said.

Newsweek has asked Representative Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Markey for comment.
