Donald Trump Makes the GOP Better, Most Republicans Still Think: Poll
Most Republicans still believe President Donald Trump makes the party better and many continue to support him running for office again in 2024, according to recent polling.
Trump became the first president to ever be impeached twice on Wednesday and faces a sustained backlash over his actions surrounding the violence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6.
However, despite criticism in the aftermath of those events, an Axios/Ipsos survey showed him in good standing among Republican-identifying respondents.
Two-thirds, 66 percent, of Republicans asked said they agree with the statement: "The Republican party is better with Donald Trump in it"—42 percent strongly and 24 percent somewhat.
When the proposition that Trump "should be the 2024 Republican candidate" was put to them, 57 percent of Republicans asked agreed—37 percent strongly and 20 percent somewhat.
These figures were boosted by Republicans who identified as Trump supporters as opposed to traditional Republicans, Ipsos noted.
Of those identifying as Trump supporters, 96 percent said he makes the party better whereas among traditional Republicans 51 percent said this.
On running in 2024, 92 percent of those identifying as Trump-supporting Republicans said they want him to run again. Among other Republicans, 41 percent backed this.
The polling was conducted from January 11 to January 13, 1,019 U.S. adults were surveyed overall and 334 of those identified as Republicans.
Trump has been frequently tipped as a potential candidate for 2024 and surveys have indicated he could muster support for another run. In polling, he has regularly come up as the favorite.
A person can hold the office of president for two terms, and these do not have to be consecutive.
Last year, Trump hinted that he would try again next time out.
"It's been an amazing four years. We are trying to do another four years. Otherwise, I'll see you in four years," he reportedly told a White House Christmas party.
He has since spoken of wanting to carry on working for his supporters, insisting in a statement accepting his term was coming to an end that: "While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it's only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again."
However, he could potentially be barred from running, should his impeachment end in conviction and senators also vote to block him from taking office again.
Newsweek has contacted the Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign for comment on the potential for a 2024 run.
