Ex 'Jeopardy!' Contestant Buzzy Cohen Calls Show a 'Loser Factory'

Jeopardy! icon Buzzy Cohen has referred to the show where he made his name as a "loser factory."

Cohen made the comments whilst appearing on Inside Jeopardy!, the fan podcast that looks deeper into and pulls back the curtain on the show. He was one of a number of guests on the latest episode speaking with host Sarah Whitcomb Foss.

Cohen made his name on Jeopardy! as a contestant in 2016 before later winning the 2017 Tournament of Champions, and then hosting the same show in May 2021. He's now one of the Chasers on the rival quiz show The Chase, after replacing Ken Jennings in 2022.

On Monday's episode of the Inside Jeopardy! podcast, Cohen was discussing being a contestant on the show.

"Jeopardy! is a unique beast in that, however you come in, no matter how cool or smart you are, eventually you get sent home a loser," Cohen said on the podcast as the host laughed. "So you're like a loser factory. Basically, two thirds of every person who appears on Jeopardy! every day is a loser."

Cohen did clarify that he had previously said the same thing about Jeopardy! when he guest hosted.

"And yet you lose with pride," replied Foss. "You're a Jeopardy! contestant. I mean, you can say that for the rest of your life. 'I was on Jeopardy!'"

Elsewhere in the episode, Cohen, alongside fellow guests Jeopardy! co-head writers Billy Wisse and Michele Loud, discussed more things relating to the popular trivia show. This included advice on wagering, the Tournament of Champions shows, and they recapped last week's summer rerun games.

The guests also previewed the upcoming Season 39 of Jeopardy! which is due to begin on September 12, 2022.

Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik will return to share hosting duties for the upcoming season. Jennings will host the Tournament of Champions edition as well as the new Second Chance Tournament, while Bialik will return to host the primetime specials and spinoffs, including a new celebrity edition of Jeopardy! which will air in September.

Bialik, who spoke to Newsweek about hosting Jeopardy! earlier this year, recently announced the famous faces we'll see on Celebrity Jeopardy!. The guests include Marvel star Simu Liu, Fresh Off the Boat actress Constance Wu, The Office's B.J. Novak, Superbad actor Michael Cera, WNBA player Candace Parker, and comedians Iliza Shlesinger, Ray Romano, Aisha Tyler and Patton Oswalt.

Season 39 of Jeopardy! will begin on September 12 with Jennings serving as host. The Second Chance Tournament will air for the first time from October 17-28, while the Tournament of Champions is expected to begin on October 31.
