Fans Say Will Smith Is Just One Example of Academy Award Winners Gone Bad

With everything the drama that happened during the 94th Annual Academy Awards, the internet is talking about previous Oscar winners that have seemingly broken the Academy's code of conduct.

While Chris Rock presented the award for Best Documentary, he made a joke concerning Will Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. Smith walked onto the stage and slapped Rock in the face, then walked off. Pinkett-Smith has a disease called Alopecia that causes hair loss and Rock seemingly made a joke about her newly shaved head.

In a video that has over 54 million views, the uncensored version shows Smith yelling "Keep my wife's name out your f***ing mouth," to Rock.

In response to the mishap, The Academy wrote an official statement on social media.

It is being reported that Smith could lose his Academy Award win for his role as Richard Williams in King Richard.

During the height of the #MeToo Movement, AMPAS CEO Dawn Hudson sent out a statement to Academy members.

"The Academy's goal is not to be an investigative body, but rather ensure that when a grievance is made, it will go through a fair and methodical process. This process will determine whether a claim will be brought to the Board for possible action regarding membership status," it read.

The statement continued: "There is no place in the Academy for people who abuse their status, power or influence in a manner that violates recognized standards of decency. The Academy is categorically opposed to any form of abuse, harassment or discrimination on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disability, age, religion, or nationality."

The internet responded to the Smith altercation by bringing attention to past Academy Award winners. Some of the most controversial include Roman Polanski and Harvey Weinstein.

In 2003, Polanski won the award for Best Director and received a standing ovation at the ceremony. Despite fleeing the country in 1978 the night before his court date to return to prison after sexually assaulting a minor the year prior, he walked away with all the kudos. Polanski is no longer a member of the film academy.

Harvey Weinstein, who has won 81 Academy Awards, has countless sexual assault allegations against him. In 2017, The New York Times broke the news of the allegations which caused Weinstein to lose his membership from the Academy. In 2020, it was announced that Weinstein will spend 23 years in prison.

Other Academy Award winners accused of sexual assault and harassment include Casey Affleck, Woody Allen, and Kevin Spacey.

"roman polanski, woody allen, casey affleck and kevin spacey all kept their oscars but the academy draws the line at a man defending his wife from being belittled in front of millions...? yeah the academy is going to the hell," one fan wrote on Twitter.

As far as the Academy's official stance, they've taken one.

"The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night's show," the Academy told Newsweek. "We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law."
