GoFundMe for 'Rust' Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins' Family Tops $120K in First 24 Hours

A fundraiser for cinematographer Halyna Hutchins' family raised over $120,000 within 24 hours after its launch.

Local 600, a cinematographers union, created the GoFundMe page after the 42-year-old was fatally shot on the Rust movie set near Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Thursday. More than 1,500 people had donated funds to help her family as of Saturday afternoon.

Newsweek contacted Local 600 for comments but didn't hear back by the time of publication.

"Halyna is survived by her husband, Matthew, and her 9-year-old son. In memory of Halyna, Local 600 has set up this GoFundMe page to help raise funds for her family at this difficult time," the union said on the fundraiser page.

On Thursday, police said that the actor Alec Baldwin, who is starring in the Western film, used a prop gun that discharged, killing Hutchins and injuring writer-director Joel Souza.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office told Newsweek on Thursday that Hutchins was transferred by a helicopter to the University of New Mexico Hospital where she "succumbed to her injuries." Souza on Saturday said he was "gutted" over the loss of Hutchins.

Police added that no charges have been made and that they are investigating the incident.

Assistant director Dave Halls gave Baldwin the gun and said that it was a "cold" weapon, meaning it had no live ammunition, according to court documents. Halls and Baldwin were unaware the gun was loaded, according to the Associated Press.

A Rust spokesperson said that the deadly incident happened due to a "misfire of a prop gun with blanks" and that the film production has been discontinued, Deadline reported.

The incident sparked reactions from Hollywood celebrities, who expressed their concerns about work safety conditions on movie sets.

"This is just so absolutely horrendous. I truly don't understand how this could have happened. Such a terrible loss of such a talented person," Bridesmaids director Paul Feig tweeted on Friday.

In another Tweet on Friday, Feig wrote: "Gun safety on sets is always a top priority and guns are supposed to be plugged. Real bullets should never be anywhere near a set."
