House With 'Dump Trump' Sign in Window Fired On With Shotgun, Ohio Police Say

A Green, Ohio resident woke up to bullet holes in their home bearing a "Dump Trump" sign on the morning after President Donald Trump won the state while the overall result in his race against Democratic nominee Joe Biden remained in doubt.

A resident of the Akron suburb told authorities that an unknown person damaged a window and siding after shooting at the sign behind the window as another person took a different anti-Trump sign from their yard, according to WEWS.

Deputies reportedly recovered two shotgun shell casings from the property. Before the shooting, the resident told authorities that photos of the signs had been placed in their mailbox alongside pro-Trump mailers.

Trump is the projected winner in Ohio, leading by about 8 percent with 90 percent of the vote counted as of Wednesday night, similar to his 2016 margin.

However, Green is located in Summit County, an area of the state that has leaned more Democratic, with Biden leading the county by around 8.5 percent, about 1 percent more than the final tally in favor of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the last election.

Ohio was one of several states where polls leading into the election showed a tighter race than the actual vote counts. A final average of polls from RealClearPolitics showed Trump leading by only 1 percent on Election Day.

Campaign signs and other signs that favored or disparaged either candidate inflamed partisan passions during election season across the country, with several heated incidents happening in states viewed as competitive.

A 55-year-old Trump supporter from Florida's Volusia County was arrested in August after allegedly punching his neighbor in the face during a dispute over dueling yard signs, apparently upset that a Biden sign was "blocking" the view of his Trump sign.

Another Florida man, an apparent Trump supporter, was arrested after allegedly using a stolen bulldozer to dig up and mow down Biden signs in a Black neighborhood in late October.

In Michigan, a local official injured his hand in early October while attempting to remove booby-trapped Trump signs that had been placed on public property where political signs were not allowed.

"When he went to remove one of the signs, he was cut by razor blades that had been attached to the bottom edge of the sign," a press release from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office read. "Both signs removed from that location had several razor blades taped all along the bottom edge."

Trump signs have also been targeted. A 19-year-old woman in New York state, apparently supporting Biden, was arrested last month after allegedly stealing "multiple" signs supporting the incumbent president. A Granite State poll released on October 19 found that 68 percent of Trump supporters would not put up yard signs over vandalism concerns, while 48 percent of Biden supporters said the same.

Newsweek reached out to the Summit County Sheriff's Office for comment.
