Internet Reacts to Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez Break-Up: 'I'm About to Shoot My Shot'

Following the Thursday announcement that singer Jennifer Lopez and former MLB player Alex Rodriguez had called off their engagement, people on Twitter reacted to the news humorously, with many new suitors announcing that they were going to try to make a move on J. Lo.

The pair had been dating since 2017 and got engaged in 2019. Despite being engaged for two years, Lopez and Rodriguez released a joint statement that made the split seem amicable. "We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another's children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support," the couple shared in a statement to Today.

Rumors that the pair had broken up began in March, but the couple denied the speculation at the time. At the time they told Today that they were "working through some things."

Even though the couple thanked those who offered their support to the "I'm Real" singer and former New York Yankees third baseman, a few people on Twitter were a little too eager to try to slide in J. Lo's DMs now that she's newly single. One person shared a GIF of John Cusack's Lloyd Dobler character in Say Anything standing with a boombox, saying he was going to try the same thing. One woman joked that her husband was excited that the singer was single again, saying that "he's been trying to dump me for her for 15 years now." She also wished him luck.

My Husband is so excited Jennifer Lopez J-Lo is available again he’s been trying to dump me for her for 15 years now!

I’m rooting for him!

One person shared a particularly amusing clip of a young A-Rod saying that Lopez would've been his dream date. "Hopefully you can find me a date with her," he told an interviewer. The person sharing it said that at least the ballplayer's "dream did come true."

A few more generalized jokes were made at both Rodriguez and Lopez's expense. Someone referenced Rodriguez's recent move to buy the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves, saying that he bought it to try to save the relationship. Another predicted that the MLB player would make a guest appearance on the next season of The Bachelorette.

A-Rod: I want to stay together, so I bought you something.
J-Lo: Ooh, you're so sweet. What is it?
A-Rod: The Minnesota Timberwolves.
