Why Mike Richards Is Hosting 'Jeopardy!' This Week

Jeopardy! is returning for its 38th season from Monday, September 13 onwards, with Matt Amodio trying to move even higher up the all-time leaderboard.

Though viewers may expect to see Amodio return, another person who will be back on the show this week may be more of a surprise. Mike Richards is set to return as the host, despite very publicly having to quit the show—first as host, then as an executive producer.

Here's why Richards is starting Season 38 as host of Jeopardy! – and when his brief run as the replacement for the late Alex Trebek will come to an end.

Why Is Mike Richards Still Hosting Jeopardy!

It is all down to the timeline of Richards' relationship with Jeopardy!

The game show producer was officially named alongside Mayim Bialik as the host of the series on August 11. He then officially stepped down on August 20, after a week of controversy.

Per the New York Times, he managed just one day of filming on August 19 before stepping down.

On that day, however, Richards managed to film five episodes, and ABC has decided to air those instalments of the show as normal.

As a result, Richards will have one week as the official Jeopardy! host. His episodes will air from Monday, September 13, to Friday, September 17.

In a statement, Richards said of exiting the series: "It pains me that these past incidents and comments have cast such a shadow on Jeopardy! as we look to start a new chapter.

"As I mentioned last week, I was deeply honored to be asked to host the syndicated show and was thrilled by the opportunity to expand my role. However, over the last several days it has become clear that moving forward as host would be too much of a distraction for our fans and not the right move for the show. As such, I will be stepping down as host effective immediately. As a result, we will be canceling production today."

Once Richards' five-day tenure as host is over, the show will go back to having a rolling roster of guest hosts. Exactly who those hosts will be has not been announced yet.

Before those hosts start taping, however, the show will air three weeks of shows filmed by former The Big Bang Theory actor Mayim Bialik.

Bialik had originally been set to present just the primetime spin-offs of Jeopardy! However, following Richards' swift departure, Jeopardy! makers Sony have confirmed that Bialik will present 15 episodes of the show while the producers search for new guest hosts.

This means that Bialik's episodes will run from Monday, September 20, until Friday, October 8.

"As we move forward with production on this season of Jeopardy!, additional guest hosts will be announced," Sony said in a statement.
