Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho led the plaudits after Portugal shocked France in Paris to win UEFA Euro 2016.

Mourinho's country had never won a major international tournament before, coming closest in Euro 2004 in Lisbon when it was defeated by Greece. But Portugal rode its luck, and the early loss of captain and totem Cristiano Ronaldo to injury, to defeat the host country 1-0 at Stade de France.

Ronaldo was stretchered off having collided with France midfielder Dimitri Payet on 24 minutes. But having withstood sustained French pressure, Portugal produced a sucker-punch deep in extra time through unheralded journeyman striker Eder, who shot low past Hugo Lloris.

"If you want to visit the country of the european champions visit PORTUGAL," Mourinho exalted on his Instagram account.
