A 28-year-old man has turned to Reddit for advice after sharing how a financial decision by his wife left him questioning the foundation of their marriage, just four years after they tied the knot and welcomed their first child.
In a post on Reddit, user lxlviperlxl said he discovered that his 26-year-old wife had taken £2,400 ($3,206) from their joint account to place non-refundable deposits on cosmetic procedures they had previously agreed not to pursue before marriage.
The total cost of the procedures is expected to reach around £14,000 ($18,702).

“I feel like that trust has been seriously damaged,” the original poster (OP) wrote, adding that while he respects bodily autonomy, the issue centers on what he calls “significant financial decisions” being made without mutual agreement.
The couple had discussed cosmetic procedures such as fillers and Botox before getting married and agreed they preferred to age naturally.
The OP said those conversations made him feel confident they shared long-term values. Now, he says, the shift has left him feeling “hurt and betrayed,” particularly because he is currently the primary earner.
'Completely stuck'
His wife has insisted that the decision is ultimately hers, and has reportedly told him it is “her body and she can choose how she wants to look.”
"Now I feel completely stuck," he confessed. "I don’t want to destroy our marriage and we have a one-year-old child who is obviously affected by all of this...
"I don’t know how to move past it."

Reddit users flocked to the comments to share their thoughts, with one writing, “Regardless of what the expense is for, 14k is too much for one person to spend without agreement from the other in a relationship.
"That’s probably the angle I’d argue, also. Surely she’s ‘allowed’ to do what she chooses with her body, but you absolutely do not need to agree to a five-figure expenditure.”
Another asked, “Where's this coming from? Who is in her ear? Is she feeling depressed since having your child?”
“I'm wondering if it's actually a ‘mommy makeover’ because she feels like her body was ruined from childbearing,” one contributor noted, pointing to the physical and emotional impact pregnancy can have.
The Reasons Behind Cosmetic Procedures
The disagreement comes as cosmetic procedures remain a common source of tension in relationships.
According to Dr. Baxter’s practice blog, “When someone likes what they see in the mirror, they feel better about themselves and better about their relationship,” highlighting how personal appearance decisions are often tied to self-esteem rather than dissatisfaction with a partner.
At the same time, financial concerns and emotional reactions from partners are common.
Dr. Ross Clevens wrote on his clinic’s website that “some people don't think plastic surgery is necessary or appropriate, while others might be concerned about the financial cost of a procedure,” pointing to the dual pressures couples may face when navigating such decisions.
