Prince Harry to Rekindle Jill Biden Friendship, but This Time for U.S. Warrior Games

Prince Harry and Jill Biden will reunite virtually to honor athletes in The Warrior Games—the U.S. veterans tournament that inspired the duke to start his own similar contest.

The Duke of Sussex and first lady have met many times before but usually in support of his Invictus Games competition for injured service men and women.

This time it will be the American military community he is supporting when the pair meet to honor athletes in the Warrior Games.

They will join a virtual event for competitors and their families and carers at 6 p.m. ET, September 13.

Harry was due to attend the 2021 tournament for the first time in eight years but the event was cancelled due to COVID.

The prince has been to the Warrior Games just once, in 2013, the same year he completed a tour on the frontline in Afghanistan.

He was fairly honest about the impact it had on him when he said it was "such a good idea by the Americans that it had to be stolen."

That comment came in 2014 at the launch event for Invictus, a tournament for sick or injured service personnel, both veterans and those still serving.

At the time he was on his way out of the armed forces and into life as a full-time working royal.

It was also towards the start of the four-year period he said he finally began processing the trauma of Princess Diana's death.

It has become a fundamental part of Harry's work both in and outside the royal family and is the subject of his first outing for Netflix, Heart of Invictus.

The event could be an opportunity for the prince to reach out to the armed forces community in America.

He joined other veterans from charity The Mission Continues to hand out meal kits for children in Los Angeles in November.

The Warrior Games will be an opportunity to show his support for the U.S. military on a bigger stage and at a time when Afghanistan war veterans have been rocked by the withdrawal from the country.

A spokesperson for the first lady's office said: "On Monday, September 13th at 6:00 PM ET, First Lady Jill Biden, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, and Ken Fisher, Chairman and CEO of Fisher House Foundation will host a virtual event to honor Warrior Games athletes, their families, and caregivers.

"The Department of Defense Warrior Games is an annual event, first held in 2010, that celebrates the resiliency and dedication of wounded, ill, and injured active duty and veteran U.S. military Service members.

"The 2021 Warrior Games were slated to begin in-person this week in Orlando, FL, but were canceled to ensure the health and safety of the athletes and their families due to COVID-related concerns. The First Lady, Secretary Austin and Prince Harry had planned to attend the Warrior Games in-person prior to its cancellation."
