Why Johnny Depp Believes Actress Ellen Barkin Is Holding Grudge Against Him

Actress Ellen Barkin, one of Amber Heard's key witnesses in the ongoing defamation trial between Heard and ex-husband Johnny Depp, allegedly holds a grudge against Depp, according to the Pirates of the Caribbean actor.

Depp is suing Heard for $50 million for defamation after Heard published an opinion piece with The Washington Post in 2018, in which she claimed she was a victim of domestic abuse. Throughout the high-profile trial, there have been several accusations that Depp has thrown bottles of wine or liquor at Heard as they have testified against one another and claimed domestic abuse.

Heard's press team revealed that Barkin is to be a key witness for Heard in the trial, and it is known that Barkin has previously accused Depp of throwing a bottle of wine at her in 1998.

Barkin, 68, co-starred with Depp in the 1998 cult classic, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Barkin claimed that the pair dated, although Depp stated their relationship was more casual.

Depp filed a libel lawsuit against British tabloid The Sun, which referred to the actor as a "wife-beater" in a 2018 article. When the trial took place in the U.K. in 2020, Heard's then-lawyer, Sarah Wass, recounted a statement from Barkin.

Barkin has spoken out about Depp's character in the past, and said in the case notes for the 2020 trial, "There is always an air of violence around him."

According to Reuters, Barkin's statement said that Depp had thrown a bottle of wine across a hotel room on one occasion and got jealous and angry. Depp had denied the allegation, claiming that Barkin held a grudge against him after he denied her a "proper relationship."

"She wanted a proper relationship with me and I did not want that," Depp said after being asked about their relationship in court. "I didn't feel the same about her as she did me and I suppose from that moment on she became very, very angry."

"I do not have an anger management problem," Depp said at the time, according to Reuters.

In her U.S. deposition highlighted within the 2020 trial, Barkin reportedly said, "Yes, Mr. Depp threw a wine bottle across the room, the hotel room, in one instance, in Las Vegas, while we were shooting Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."

She confirmed that the bottle did not hit her, and stated that Depp never hit her or assaulted her in any way.

A video recently played at the 2022 trial in Fairfax, Virginia, showed Depp clearly agitated and appearing to kick kitchen cabinets and throw a wine glass.

However, Depp has also testified that Heard threw a large bottle of vodka at him during a fight, cutting off the tip of his finger.

The trial continues and closing arguments are expected on May 27.
