People line up to place flowers at a makeshift memorial for former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe outside Yamato-Saidaiji Station on July 9. The country’s longest-serving prime minister was fatally shot during a campaign stop outside the station on July 8. The alleged gunman used a handmade firearm, likely because of the country’s strict gun ownership laws, which have historically given it one of the lowest gun-crime rates in the world.
