Who Is Kate Sharma in 'Bridgerton' Season 2?

On Saturday, Netflix gave viewers a closer look at a number of their hit shows and up-and-coming series at their TUDUM fan event.

Bridgerton was one of the shows that fans got a sneak peek of, with a first look clip teasing Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma's (Simone Ashley) tense introduction to one another.

While season one of Bridgerton focused on Anthony's sister Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and her romance with Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), season two is all about her eldest brother.

Anthony has decided he is ready to find himself a wife after enjoying a bachelor's life for many years, but he has a number of requirements that a woman needs to fulfil before he can consider them a future bride.

The teaser clip shows Anthony and Kate coming face-to-face after the latter overheard his conditions for a suitable companion, and she gives him a dressing down for seeing women as "breeding stock" and nothing more.

Kate is a formidable force, and certainly not one that Anthony is expecting, so here is everything you need to know about the new character.

Who is Kate Sharma?

Kate is a headstrong woman whose only interest in being part of the ton's marriage market is to ensure her younger sister Edwina (Charithra Chandran) is happy and finds a suitable match.

Edwina has been taught by Kate to be a perfect debutante, but while she has entered society to find a husband, all she wants is a true love match.

In Julia Quinn's book, The Viscount Who Loved Me, Kate is at loggerheads with Anthony after he sets his sights on her sister, seeing Edwina as a woman who would make a suitable wife and mother to his future heirs.

But Kate won't let Anthony woo her sister, and she will stop at nothing to make sure he doesn't step foot anywhere near Edwina.

In the novel, Kate, Edwina and their mother Lady Mary's last name is Sheffield, but this has been changed to Sharma to match Ashley, Chandran and Shelley Conn's South-Asian background.

Where you've seen Simone Ashley before

Ashley is not new to the Netflix family, as she has a recurring role in the streaming platform's hit series Sex Education.

The actor portrays Olivia Hanan, a member of "The Untouchables" at Moordale Secondary School alongside Ruby Matthews (Mimi Keene) and Anwar Bakshi (Chaneil Kular).

As well as Sex Education, Ashley also appeared in several ITV dramas including the third season of Broadchurch and The Sister.
