Epic Games Store 2022 Giveaway List: Grab 'Cris Tales' for Free Next Week

Cris Tales is the next freebie that will be given away on the Epic Games Store.

The Epic Games Store is continuing its weekly giveaway promotion throughout 2022, meaning that there will be at least one new title available to download each week.

Since 2019, the digital storefront (owned by Fortnite developer Epic Games) has been offering these freebies to reel in additional customers and compete with its closest rivals like Steam or EA's Origin platform.

The releases that have been included in the giveaway scheme have ranged from small-scale indies, to cult classics and even AAA blockbusters such as GTA V and Remedy Entertainment's Control.

Sometimes there is just one new game listed per week, but on other occasions there could be up to two or three. You might also see Downloadable Content (DLC) packs or currency bundles being handed out.

To be eligible for the weekly giveaway, you don't need to sign up to any premium subscriptions or anything like that. Instead, you just need a valid Epic Games account and a PC with which to launch any titles that you download.

In both 2020 and 2021, Newsweek maintained a log of every release that was handed out by the Epic Games Store. Given that the scheme will be continuing for 2022, we are going to keep on tracking the developments.

Here you can find a list of every game that has been given away thus far in 2022, as well as instructions on how to actually download them.

How To Get Freebies From the Epic Games Store

At least one new free game will be uploaded to the digital storefront every Thursday at 11 a.m. ET. For those in other time zones, this translates to 4 p.m. GMT and 8 a.m. PST.

At this point, you will have seven days to download the title before the offer expires. You can also check this article here to see what will be available the following week, as they are announced ahead of time.

To claim the freebie, you just need to log into your account on the Epic Games Store. If you don't have one of these already, you can sign-up at any time by following this link.

Once you are logged in, head over to the storefront's homepage and scroll down until you reach the "Free Games" section. From there, navigate to the game in question's product page and then click on the orange "Get" button.

Finally, agree to the End User License Agreement (EULA) that should appear in a pop-up box and click "place order" as if you were actually purchasing the game. It will then be yours to keep forever and you will receive an email receipt.

Cris Tales (February 24 - March 3, 2022)

Cris Tales is a time-travel story with a unique twist. While most games that involve temporal manipulation have you shifting between past, present and future, this has you coexisting in all three states at once (thanks to a clever split-screen mechanic).

In terms of gameplay, it is a turn-based RPG with a branching narrative that might not sound particularly innovative, but the time mechanics help it stand out from the crowd.

Cris Tales has a "Fair" rating on Open Critic with a Top Critic Average score of 73.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (February 17-24, 2022)

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is the debut title from Josef Fares (who made the Game Awards' best release of 2021). Like most of the director's other works, it's an emotional and story-heavy experience about the connection between a central duo, in this case a pair of siblings.

Unlike A Way Out or It Takes Two, this is not a cooperative experience, and you cannot play along with a friend. Instead, the gimmick is that you control both characters simultaneously, with them each having different abilities and skillsets.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons has a "Strong" rating on Open Critic with a Top Critic Average score of 77.

Windbound (February 10-17, 2022)

Windbound is an exploration-heavy adventure title with a visual style that recalls The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In it, you control a young warrior who is stranded on a mysterious archipelago and must uncover its secrets.

While exploring the islands, you will need to hunt for food, craft resources to defend yourself and master the art of sailing.

Speaking of which, one of Windbound's defining traits is that you get to customize your own vessel for navigating the tempestuous waters and evading creatures that lurk below the depths of the water.

Windbound has a "Weak" rating on Open Critic with a Top Critic Average score of 65.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair (February 3-10, 2022)

The original Yooka-Laylee was actually featured in the 2021 Epic Games Store giveaway and now its sequel is being offered so that you can complete the set.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair jettisons the collect-a-thon stylings of its predecessor in favor of a more linear approach.

The game is a side-scrolling platformer known for its punishing difficulty (the title isn't just for show), especially when it comes to the final stage. However, players can choose to undertake additional challenges to earn extra hit-points and make things a little easier for themselves.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair has a "Strong" rating on Open Critic with a Top Critic Average score of 83.

Daemon X Machina (January 27-February 3, 2022)

Daemon X Machina is set in a world where artificial intelligence has gone haywire and robots are waging war against their creators. As one of "The Outers," a select group of mech pilots with special abilities, your job is to protect the last remnants of humanity against this digital threat.

The action plays out from a third-person perspective, with you controlling a customizable mech in encounters that blend shooting and melee. According to aggregate site How Long To Beat (which takes user submitted playthrough times and compiles an average length), Daemon X Machina can be finished in 16 hours if you are just ploughing through the main story. Meanwhile, a completionist run will take you closer to 36 hours.

Daemon X Machina has a "Fair" rating on Open Critic with a Top Critic Average score of 71.

Relicta is a puzzle game that forces you to confront problems using science. The solutions here often involve you manipulating physics, exploiting magnetic fields to your advantage, and playing around with the laws of gravity.

It's all wrapped up in an enthralling sci-fi mystery that will take you about 13 hours to complete. If you are a fan of things like The Turing Test, The Talos Principle or even Portal, this might just be up your street.

Relicta has a "Strong" rating on Open Critic with a Top Critic Average score of 75.

Galactic Civilizations III is a turn-based strategy game depicting future conflicts in the 23rd century. In it, you must colonize new worlds by researching new technologies, engaging in diplomacy with alien species, and (inevitably) by waging war.

In addition to governing your colony, you also have the opportunity to customize your own ships and even entire fleets, with cosmetics and arsenal upgrades.

To kick off the year, Epic Games have given away all three entries from Crystal Dyanmics' Tomb Raider trilogy.

These reboots were praised for taking the floundering series in a brand-new direction that was darker and more down to earth. Shadow of the Tomb Raider in particular has been praised for its introspective look at the character of Lara Croft, its clever puzzles, fun exploration and brutal action. It also happens to be one of the most expensive games ever produced, with a budget of over $110 million. So, the graphics are naturally impeccable.

With this definitive edition, you also get seven extra challenge tombs, and all of the game's DLC weapons and outfits.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider has a "Strong" rating on Open Critic with a Top Critic Average score of 80.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration (December 30 2021 – January 6 2022

The middle chapter in Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider trilogy is often regarded as the best one. It expanded upon the scope of the previous installment, delivered cutting-edge graphics (for the time) and had a compelling storyline.

With the 20 Year Celebration edition, you are also treated to all of the game's DLC packs, its co-op endurance mode, an "Extreme Survivor" difficulty setting and exclusive cosmetics.

Rise of the Tomb Raider has a "Mighty" rating on Open Critic with a Top Critic Average score of 86.

The first game in Crystal Dynamics' rebooted Tomb Raider continuity was hailed as a breath of fresh air for a franchise that was assumed to be over the hill.

Stripping things back to basics (and taking more than a little inspiration from the Uncharted games), it reimagined Lara Croft as a more relatable character and not a larger-than-life action hero. The emphasis was on stealth, scrappy combat encounters and a more grounded atmosphere, which helped to inspire the 2018 movie adaptation starring Alicia Vikander.

Tomb Raider has the rare "Mighty" rating on Open Critic with a Top Critic Average score of 85.
