Jill Biden Explains 'Love' Jacket After Drawing Melania Trump Comparisons

First lady Jill Biden has explained the meaning behind the "Love" jacket that she wore in the U.K. on Thursday ahead of the G7 Summit, after it drew comparisons to an outfit Melania Trump wore, also on trip, during the previous administration.

During President Joe Biden's meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Cornwall, England, on Thursday, the first lady wore a black jacket over her black-and-white polka dot dress that was emblazoned on the back with the word "Love."

The jacket immediately drew comparisons to a jacket worn by Melania Trump, the former first lady, while on a trip to visit a migrant children detention center in Texas at the U.S./Mexico border in 2018. Some wondered if the jacket was a dig at Trump, while others just noted the difference in tone.

Trump's jacket was emblazoned with the words "I really don't care, do u?" on the back, which prompted confusion among commentators due to the sensitive nature of her trip. Her trip had come only a day after then President Donald Trump signed an executive order halting the practice of separating children from their parents at the border. At the time, more than 2,300 children had been forcibly taken from their family as part of the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" immigration policy.

Trump's spokesperson would later say that the jacket was directed at journalists and not a comment on the border situation.

After Jill Biden's jacket caused a stir on Thursday, the first lady was asked by reporters about the meaning behind her outfit choice.

"We're bringing love from America," she explained. "This is a global conference, and we are trying to bring unity across the globe, and I think it's needed right now, that people feel a sense of unity from all the countries and feel a sense of hope after this year of the pandemic."

The first lady is currently in Cornwall with Joe Biden for the G7 summit.

Jill Biden, who is continuing to teach writing at Northern Virginia Community College alongside her duties as first lady, explained to reporters that her husband has been "studying for weeks" for the visit to the U.K., his first overseas trip as president, and joked that he is probably "over-prepared."

She explained that "Joe loves foreign policy. This is his forte," and said that she and her husband have "looked forward to this for weeks and now we're finally here," before describing it as a "beautiful beginning."

Following the end of the summit on Sunday, Joe and Jill Biden will travel east from Cornwall to have tea with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.

Joe Biden will be the fifth U.S. president welcomed into the castle and will be the 13th to meet the queen during her reign.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday about that part of their trip, Jill Biden said: "Joe and I are both looking forward to meeting the Queen. That's an exciting part of the visit for us."

Newsweek has contacted the White House for comment.
