Lauren Boebert Says Rape Victims Need Guns Rather Than Access to Abortion

Rep. Lauren Boebert has suggested that rape victims need guns to protect themselves rather than access to abortions.

Speaking on the House floor, the Republican congresswoman from Colorado criticized Democrats who are planning to vote on legislation that would codify Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that protects the right to choose to have an abortion. She also claimed that the procedures were not safe for women.

Boebert branded the Democrat lawmakers "baby-killing advocates" and accused them of "spewing lies and half truths" following the passage of a bill in Texas that bans abortions in almost all circumstances after six weeks.

The congresswoman also challenged claims made by people who oppose the restrictive Texas legislation.

"Lie No 1: abortion is good for women. That some CNN fake news right there," Boebert said.

"Women who have an abortion have an 81 percent increase in risk for mental health problems and are 35 percent more likely to commit suicide. Abortion doubles the risk of alcoholism for women, increases the risk of future miscarriages by up to 60 percent. Every abortion leaves one dead and one wounded."

The argument that women who have been raped should have access to an abortion is "wrong," said Boebert, a gun rights advocate. She suggested that these women simply needed to be armed.

"They need love. They need support. They need safety and healing. They needed a Glock-19 when it happened," she said.

"It's time we start addressing killing the raper [rapist], rather than the baby."

A number of people have condemned Boebert's remarks after a clip of her House statement was posted on Twitter.

Health care advocate Kendall Brown tweeted: "If I'd had a gun after being raped, I would have turned it on myself, thanks to the lack of mental health services in my Republican-led state.

"If I'd been forced to carry my rapist's child, I would have ended my life. But Lauren Boebert doesn't actually care about rape victims."

Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, which was set up in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, posted: "WTF: Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert blames rape victims for their own assaults, saying they should have been armed to fend off rapists.

"The vast majority of rape victims—more than two-thirds—are assaulted by someone they know."

In her closing remarks, Boebert said "heartbeat" abortion bills were restrictive—and that was why she was "proud to support them."

She added: "I am proud that in just a few years because of heartbeat bills all across America, there will be children enrolling in elementary schools laughing and smiling because someone took a stand for the voiceless. God bless these children. God bless their mothers and God bless America."

Boebert has been contacted for comment.
