'Pokémon Go' Zapdos Community Day: Start Time, Counters and How to Catch Shiny

Pokémon Go players around the world successfully completed the recent Global challenges and unlocked awesome in-game bonuses like double candy alongside a special Zapdos Community Day event on July 21.

Similar to the Articuno Community Day event earlier this month, Pokémon Go players will be gifted five Raid Passes to take on at least five Zapdos that will appear in every Gym in the game. These Zapdos are not just a great opportunity to add a Legendary Pokémon to your Pokedex, but these Electric and Flying-type birds come with the special Thundershock quick attack. These Zapdos even have a chance to be shiny.

Here's all the information Pokémon Go players will need to know about the Zapdos Community Day event including the start time and the best counters to use to take it down.

START TIME

Niantic has not confirmed the time range for the Zapdos Community Day, but if it's like the Articuno Day a few weeks back then trainers can expect it to last from 2-5 p.m. EDT. We will update once we get confirmation as to how long Zapdos will appear in Raids.

SHINY ZAPDOS

Like other Community Day events, Pokémon Go players will have a chance to catch a Shiny Zapdos in one of the Raids starting July 21. Battle alongside friends during these Raids and, if you're lucky, the Zapdos that appears for you to capture will be in its Shiny form.

BEST COUNTERS TO TAKE DOWN ZAPDOS

Zapdos is a Tier 5 Raid Boss in Pokémon Go, and as such it will be hard to take down. This Legendary Bird is an Electric and Flying-type Pokémon so it's only weaknesses are Ice and Rock attacks. However, many Ice-type Pokémon also have the Water typing, which makes them weak to Electric attacks. So we recommend not bringing in any Cloysters or Lapras into battle with Zapdos.

There aren't many Pokémon with the fire power or attacks to take down Zapdos in a timely fashion, so you may have to rely on Pokémon that take and deal neutral hits like Dragonite and Salamence.

Here are the best counters to go against Zapdos in Pokémon Go:

  • Tyranitar - Smackdown and Stone Edge
  • Golem - Rock Throw and Stone Edge
  • Salamence - Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor
  • Dragonite - Dragon Tail and Outrage
  • Piloswine - Ice Shard and Avalanche
