Hello, I'm Gabe Whisnant, and welcome to Newsweek's Bulletin. Here's what you need to know today.
Election officials in several states are refusing to allow Justice Department monitors inside polling places for Tuesday's midterm elections. The DOJ plans to deploy roughly 1,000 monitors across all 50 states, compared with 289 during the 2022 midterms. Officials in Indiana, Kentucky and parts of Arkansas say monitors must remain outside voting locations. The Justice Department says its monitors will observe potential violations of federal law without interfering with voting.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon has raised the number of U.S. military deaths connected to the Iran war to 23 after adding 2 Air Force fatalities to its casualty database. Both deaths were classified as nonhostile, with one attributed to illness and the other still under investigation. Of the 23 deaths, 11 were caused by enemy fire, while 12 were classified as nonhostile. Another 865 American service members have been wounded.
Finally, Republican Vivek Ramaswamy says his campaign has finished airing a controversial advertisement featuring Donna Arthur, the estranged birth mother of his Democratic opponent in Ohio's governor's race, Dr. Amy Acton. In the ad, Arthur calls her daughter a liar and disputes her account of a troubled childhood. The ad sparked backlash because Acton says she was sexually abused as a child by her mother's partner. Ramaswamy says the commercial completed its scheduled run and confirmed that 4 replacement ads will now air. The controversy also drew criticism from Republican Governor Mike DeWine, who publicly opposed the ad despite Ramaswamy being his party's candidate to succeed him.
Until next time, that's all for now.
