Hello, I'm Shane Croucher. Welcome to Newsweek's Bulletin. Here's what you need to know today. The US has deployed a weapon in Earth's orbit in a move that has raised the prospect of an accelerating space arms race with Russia and China. Secretary of the Air Force Troy Mink told the Air, Space and Cyber Conference that the on-orbit weapon was needed to protect US forces against hostile enemy action. A 1967 treaty bans weapons of mass destruction in orbit. However, the US, Russia and China have explored weapons outside the treaty, including ways to target satellites and disrupt military communications, surveillance and navigation. US officials have thus far been tight-lipped about US space weapons, so Mink's statement marks a significant shift in rhetoric from Washington. Three people were killed when a television news helicopter covering a fatal bus collision crashed and burst into flames in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening. The aircraft was NBC4's news chopper 4. Two of those killed were aboard the helicopter while the third was on the ground according to reports. Two other people were taken to a hospital. The crash sparked a fire that damaged four vehicles and two storage containers. Residents of an English village have voted to become independent from the United Kingdom in a symbolic referendum spurred by anger over plans to house migrants in its vicinity. Researchers in Piddington, located about 60 miles north of London in Oxford shire, voted on Tuesday in response to proposals to house up to 1,250 male asylum seekers at a former military base in nearby Bista. Although the result has no legal basis, the ballot shows the strength of feeling against the UK government's plans to convert the former military base into a centre for asylum seekers. Until next time, that's all for now.
