President Joe Biden has confirmed that he plans to run for re-election in 2024—and polling suggests he would defeat Donald Trump again.
Trump has dropped several hints about making another run for the White House and surveys have reported that he would be the frontrunner for the GOP nomination in 2024.
But Biden—who told reporters on Thursday: "My plan is to run for re-election. That's my expectation"—remains more popular than his predecessor, according to a poll from YouGov/The Economist.
The survey, which tracks the favorability of both men and other leading figures in the Democratic Party and the GOP, found that the president is more popular overall and has stronger favorability with Democrats than Trump has with Republicans.
The poll found that 32 percent of respondents had a very favorable opinion of Biden and 18 percent had a somewhat favorable view.
Among Democrats, 70 percent chose "very favorable" and 21 percent said "somewhat favorable."
For Trump, 27 percent of all respondents had a very favorable opinion of him and 15 percent opted for "somewhat favorable." Among Republicans, 61 percent said "very favorable" and 23 percent chose "somewhat favorable."
The poll was conducted among 1,500 U.S. adults from March 20 to 23. The margin of error based on answers from the entire sample is 2.9 percentage points.
Trump has persisted with claims that fraud and irregularities in the 2020 election facilitated Biden's win, although there is no evidence of this. More than 60 lawsuits attempting to challenge the results in various states have failed.
In recent weeks the former president has repeatedly criticized Biden for the problems at the southern border, returning to a talking point that helped him win power in 2016.
Trump spoke about his border wall and rising gas prices during an interview on Fox News on Thursday. Asked by host Laura Ingraham about Biden's comments on the 2024 election, which came during the president's first press conference since he took office, Trump said the question put to his successor was a "softball."
"That's a really nice question because you're sort of forgetting everything that's taken place over the last number of weeks and number of months. And, you see what I see, and everybody sees it," Trump said.
During the press briefing, Biden was also asked about the potential of Trump running against him in 2024, to which he replied: "Oh, come on. I don't even think about—I don't—I have no idea. I have no idea if there will be a Republican Party. Do you?"
The president added that his focus was on getting "things done" for "hardworking, decent American people."
"I mean, look, this is—the way I view things—I've become a great respecter of fate in my life," he said.
"I set a goal that's in front of me to get things done for the people I care most about, which are hardworking, decent American people who are getting—really having it stuck to them."
In the 2020 election, Biden defeated Trump by 306 to 232 in the Electoral College, and by around 7 million in the popular vote.
Newsweek has contacted the White House and the Office of the Former President for comment on their favorability ratings and on the 2024 election.
