Haley Stevens Endorses Mike Rogers, Private Jet Crashes in Florida, Russia Losing Ground: The Bulletin, Nov. 2

Democratic Representative Haley Stevens endorsed Republican candidate Mike Rogers in Michigan’s closely watched Senate race Sunday, delivering a sharp late blow to Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed just days before an election that could determine control of the chamber. A private jet crashed into a mobile home community in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday, igniting a massive fireball near homes and a major roadway and killing all nine people on board, authorities said. Russian forces lost territory for the second consecutive month amid record troop losses, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) whose latest map shows the state of play along the frontline.

Hello —I’m Megan Cartwright, Welcome to Newsweek’s Bulletin. Here’s what you need to know today. President Donald Trump invited Democratic Michigan Representative Haley Stevens to join the Republican Party after she switched her Senate endorsement to GOP nominee Mike Rogers instead of Democrat Abdul El-Sayed. Speaking to his supporters at a rally in Iowa, Trump referred to Stevens' decision as brave, after she announced the switch earlier in the day alongside Rogers at a church in Detroit. Stevens' decision drew criticism from senior Democratic Party members, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. The Michigan U.S. Senate race is seen as one of the most crucial for the Democrats in their effort to take back control of both chambers of Congress. A private jet crashed into a mobile home community in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday, igniting a massive fireball near homes and a major roadway and killing all nine people on board. The aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. The impact left a large crater in the pavement, with flames rising near a utility pole and thick black smoke billowing from the scene. Burning chunks of pavement could also be seen as people gathered nearby. Russian forces lost territory for the second consecutive month amid record troop losses, according to the Institute for the Study of War. The Washington, D.C. think tank said it had assessed that Russian forces had lost more territory in October than they had consolidated while Ukraine's estimates of Russian troop losses hit almost 2,000 a day. The high casualty rates and territorial losses show how Russian forces "have lost the initiative and their offensive capabilities in much of the theater," the think tank said.
